DURHAM, N.C. --After a slow start on Saturday at Koskinen Stadium, the Duke women's lacrosse team rebounded to post a 13-7 win over No. 9 North Carolina. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest, before Kate Kaiser and Katie Chrest ignited the Blue Devil offensive attack. Kaiser finished the day with four goals, while Chrest added two goals and two assists.
Duke, ranked fifth in the IWLCA preseason poll, improved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC with the win, while North Carolina falls to 2-3 and 0-2. The Blue Devils also collected three points in the Carlyle Cup, the all sports competition between Duke and North Carolina presented by Carlyle & Company Jewelers. Duke now holds a 15.5 to 14.0 advantage in the competition.
Nicki Barnes spotted North Carolina to a 1-0 lead just 2:30 into contest and teammate Rachel Szakmary tacked on another goal less than two minutes later for an early Tar Heel advantage. Duke responded with the next five goals beginning with a Jessica Bennett tally off a Chrest pass with 25:06 left in the half.
Cheryl Lynn Horton knotted the game at 2-2 at the 22:17 mark and Kaiser gave Duke the lead for good with her first goal one minute and one second later with Chrest collecting her second assist on the play. After a Chrest goal with 20:32 left in the half, Kaiser registered her second goal just over a minute later for a 5-2 Blue Devil lead.
Free position goals by Carolina's Allison Higgins and Beth Ames narrowed the Duke lead to 5-4 with under three minutes left in the opening stanza. Duke's Bennett extended the lead back to two goals with her second marker of the day with 2:39 left in the half, but a goal by the Tar Heels' Barnes with just ten seconds remaining created a 6-5 Blue Devil lead after thirty minutes of action.
Lauren Gallagher scored 52 seconds into the second half and the Blue Devils never looked back, scoring the next three goals as well. Meghan Miller slipped through the Tar Heel defense with 26:56 left in the second half and Kaiser added a free position goal minutes later to give Duke a 9-5 advantage. With 23:42 remaining in the game, Bennett tallied her third goal of the day for a 10-5 Blue Devil lead.
Ames collected her second goal just over a minute later, but that was countered by Kaiser's fourth and final goal with 16:30 left to play. Gallagher added a free position goal, her 16th goal of the season, with 7:31 left in the game, but Carolina's Allison Higgins quickly answered with her own free position goal with just over six minutes remaining.
Duke closed the scoring with 27 second left when Kristy Dirks found Chrest, the team's leading scorer with 17 goals and 24 points, open in front of the goal on a breakaway for the 13th and final goal. The Blue Devils collected 13 goals on 24 shots for a .542 shooting percentage, while North Carolina was 7-of-24 for a .292 shooting percentage.
