Tar Heels Hold Off Duke, 5-3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -North Carolina (29-11 8-5 ACC) defeated Duke (14-23, 0-12 ACC), 5-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Boshamer Stadium. Kevin Brower pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to collect his third win of the season and Scott Senatore picked up his first save of the season by recording the final out. Jeremy Cleveland led the way for the Tar Heels offensively, going 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Duke jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Blue Devils loaded the bases thanks to a single and two walks. With two outs, Javier Socorro hit a ground ball to first base which got past Chris Iannetta and allowed Grant Stanley and Michael Golom to score.
The Tar Heels put a run on the board in the bottom of the third. With two outs, an RBI double by Sean Farrell scored Greg Mangum who had singled earlier in the inning.
Carolina tied the score with another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cleveland singled for the third consecutive at-bat and came around with the Tar Heels' second run when Sammy Hewitt bounced a single into left field two batters later.
UNC took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Mike Daniel singled up the middle, then moved to second on Blair Waggett's sacrifice bunt. Mangum then came through with an RBI single, scoring Daniel and giving Carolina a 3-2 lead. Chad Prosser followed with his first hit of the day, an RBI double down the right field line which brought Mangum around and gave the Tar Heels a two-run advantage.
The Tar Heels added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Cleveland's 12th double of the year and fourth hit of the day scored Prosser who had reached on an infield single.
Duke centerfielder Senterrio Landrum brought the Blue Devils within two runs with a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.
The Tar Heels and Blue Devils will play game two of Saturday's doubleheader at 6 p.m. The third and final game of the series is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Easter Sunday.
