No. 1 Tar Heels Take Down No. 3 UCLA 5-2

DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman midfielder Amy Steadman tallied her first two career goals, including the game-winning goal in the 47th minute, to pace the No. 1 North Carolina women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over No. 3 UCLA in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium Friday evening. The win kept the Tar Heels unbeaten and untied at 8-0 while the Bruins fell to 4-1-2 with the loss.
The Bruins outshot the Tar Heels 16-11 but Carolina was quite efficient, scoring five times in its 11 tries. UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget, who had not allowed a goal since the first half of a win over Washington on August 31, made five saves while allowing UCLA its two goals.
UNC got on the board just 1:47 into the match as Steadman, a freshman from Brevard, N.C., scored her first career goal, knocking in a shot from five yards out off a cross by UNC's Lori Chalupny. UNC's lead would be very short-lived, however, as UCLA tied the score just 18 seconds later. Sarah-Gayle Swanson tallied her fifth goal of the season, taking a pass from Iris Mora and converting from 10 yards out. The goal was the first allowed by UNC in almost 455 minutes of play over the last seven matches.
Carolina retook the lead in the 19th minute thanks to Alyssa Ramsey's third goal of the season. Steadman fed Carolina's Heather O'Reilly down the left side and UCLA goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo was forced to come out on O'Reilly. She tipped O'Reilly's pass to Ramsey slightly but not enough to keep the Tar Heel senior from finishing into an open net.
The first couple of minutes of the second half proved to be as action filled as the first three minutes of the first half. Just 41 seconds into the second period, UNC was called for a foul in the box and UCLA reserve Whitney Jones converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the score at 2-2. Carolina would notch the game winner just 37 seconds later. Kacey White served a ball into the UCLA penalty area that flicked on by Maggie Tomecka to Steadman who slotted a shot from about 10 yards out over Lombardo.
At 65:06, UNC added to its lead as Kendall Fletcher scored on a long free kick that deflected off a UCLA defender into the goal. Carolina then added an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Fletcher cleared a ball out of danger in UNC's territory and Ramsey ran onto the pass down the left side. Ramsey carried the ball deep into the UCLA penalty area and then slotted the ball back perfectly to Lindsay Tarpley who scored her sixth goal of the season past Bruin reserve goalkeeper Arianna Criscione.
The Tar Heels will be back in action again on Sunday when they play Richmond in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
