Tar Heel Kevin Silva Is Runner-Up at Ping/Golfweek Preview

Hot Springs, Va. - University of North Carolina golfer Kevin Silva finished as the runner-up of the Ping/Golfweek Preview after firing a one-over-par 71 in the final round for a 139 total. Silva, who led all individuals going into the final round, finished one stroke behind John Poucher of UCLA who fired a two-under 68 on the second day. Carolina tied for seventh place in the team race with a 582 total after carding a pair of 291s. UCLA captured the team title with a 572 total, 10 strokes ahead of the Tar Heels, to finish atop the 15-team field. Georgia Tech finished one shot behind the Bruins at 573 while Clemson and Florida tied for third place at 575.
Trailing Poucher and Silva in the individual race was UCLA's Travis Johnson and Georgia Tech's Thomas Jordan who tied for third place at 140. Four players tied for fifth place - Clemson's Gregg Jones, UNLV's Ryan Moore, Arizona State's Chez Reavle and Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers.
While Silva, a sophomore from New Bedford, Mass., led the Tar Heels, Dustin Bray, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., tied for 20th place with a 145 total after rounds of 72-73. Ted Smith, a sophomore from Westlake, Ohio, and Will Dottley, a freshman from Madison, Miss., both tied for 47th place with 150 totals. Dottley posted a two-over 72 in the final round while Smith carded a 77. Fernando Figueroa, a sophomore from San Salvador, El Salvador, carded a 75 for a 158 total and finished in 72nd place.
The Preview was played at the Cascades Course at The Homestead Resort which features a par 70, 6,679-yard layout and will be the site of next spring's NCAA Championship. The tournament, originally scheduled to be 54 holes, was shortened to 36 holes due to weather conditions on Monday.
