CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina exploded for three goals in the second half while outshooting No. 24 Kentucky 15-0 in the second 45 minutes as the Tar Heels blanked the Wildcats 4-0 in the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field Friday night before a crowd of 3,255. Carolina remained unbeaten on the season as it improved to 3-0 while the Wildcats lost their first match and dropped to 2-1.
Lori Chalupny got the Tar Heels on the board in the first half as she scored the eventual game-winning goal at 22:01. Both Mary McDowell and Alyssa Ramsey assisted on the goal as Chalupny's 16-yard shot found the upper right shelf to give her the Tar Heels' game-winning goal for the second straight match. The score remained 1-0 at the half despite a 13-3 edge in shots for Carolina in the first half. Kentucky goalkeeper Liz Butler made five first-half saves to keep the Wildcats close in the contest.
After intermission, however, UNC had a burst of energy that put the game away in the first 16 minutes of the second half. At 57:47, McDowell pounced on the rebound of Lindsay Tarpley's original shot that was saved by Butler to score into an empty net. It was McDowell's first goal of the season. Just over three minutes later Tarpley scored a goal of her own, her fourth of the season, on a textbook breakaway. Kacey White started the play in the midfield by feeding Ramsey who then threaded her pass through a pair of defenders to the onrushing Tarpley who finished past Butler into the lower left corner.
Carolina finished the night's scoring at 78:08 as Anne Morrell notched her first goal of the season assisted by Libby Guess, who earned her first career point on the play. Morrell scored on a tough angle inside the left post despite a sprawling effort by Butler.
Aly Winget posted her second solo shutout of the season and fifth of her career and finished the match with three saves.
UNC ended up with a 28-3 shot advantage. Play in the Nike Carolina Classic will continue Sunday with No. 8 Duke (3-0) meeting No. 24 Kentucky (2-1) at noon followed by No. 1 UNC (3-0) against No. 18 Nebraska (2-1) at 2 p.m. The Fetzer Field gates will open at 11 a.m.
