CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Jessi Perruquet won three individual events and anchored one winning relay and sophomores Lizzy Bruce and Emily Carroll were each part of three wins as the No. 15 North Carolina women's swimming and diving team defeated No. 17 Virginia 171-129 in dual meet action Sunday afternoon at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. The win was the 13th in a row for the Tar Heels in ACC dual meets dating back to a loss to the Cavaliers in Koury Natatorium two years ago.
It was the final home meet for 10 Tar Heel seniors and they went out in style, led by Perruquet, who swept the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles while anchoring the 200-yard medley relay to victory. Bruce and Carroll also had big days for Carolina. Bruce won both breaststroke events, posting a 2003-04 ACC best time of 2:15.85 in the 200-yard breaststroke. That was also Bruce's personal best time in the event and she now ranks fourth in Carolina history. Bruce, Perruquet and Carroll all swam on UNC's 200-yard medley relay team which had a season best time of 1:43.63. Carroll won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.20, her career best, while also swimming on the 200 medley relay and anchoring the 400 freestyle relay to a come-from-behind win.
Carolina's other victories came in both diving events as freshman Lauren Karatanevski won one-meter diving with a score of 278.70 while senior Lindsay Waddell led a Tar Heel sweep of the top six places in three-meter diving with a winning score of 300.00.
With the victory Carolina improves to 7-2 overall on the season and 4-0 in the ACC. Virginia is now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference meets. UNC will conclude its regular season next Saturday with an 11 a.m. meet at undefeated Maryland. Virginia will return to the pool against Pittsburgh at 12 noon on February 1 in Charlottesville, Va.
