North Carolina's Golf Team Finishes 16th At Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. - North Carolina's men's golf team opened its spring season with a 16th-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship. The Tar Heels fired a 296 in the final round for a 915 total. South Carolina captured the team championship with an 860 total after firing a five-under-par 283 in the final round. Oklahoma State and Florida finished in a distant second place with 888 totals. Clemson and Texas are deadlocked in fourth place at 889.
Jason Hartwick of Texas captured the individual title after firing a five-under 67 in the final round for a five-under 211 total. Runner-up Eirik Johansen of South Carolina also carded a final-round 67, finishing three shots back at 214. Clemson's Gregg Jones and South Carolina's Jake Thompson tied for third place with 215 totals while four players, including Carolina's Dustin Bray, are tied for fifth place at even-par 216.
ray, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., fired a one-under 71 in the final round. Tar Heel sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., also posted a top-20 finish as he closed with a 76 for a 222 total to tie for 17th place. Freshman Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, finished with a 235 total and tied for 67th place while Ted Smith, a sophomore from Westlake, Ohio, finished 84th with a 242 total and Matt Crenshaw, a junior from Burlington, N.C., finished with a 249 total in 88th place
The 54-hole event was played at Sawgrass Country Club which features a par 72, 6,955 yards.
