CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior second baseman Greg Mangum's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted No. 17 North Carolina (1-0) to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Seton Hall (0-1) on opening day Friday at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, the Tar Heels are now 6-0 on opening day under head coach Mike Fox.
Senior Whitley Benson (1-0) earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out four and walked two. Seton Hall's Tim Dexter, who surrendered Mangum's game-winning hit, took the loss.
After a scoreless 10th inning, junior left fielder Ross Cook led off the 11th with a walk. He took second on a two-out single by pinch hitter Matt Ellington and then moved to third when freshman shortstop Craig Corrado drew a walk. Mangum then singled to end the game.
Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, Carolina scratched out two runs in that inning, and junior right fielder Marshall Hubbard homered to left field off Seton Hall preseason All-America closer Chris Noonan to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth. Neither team scored in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
To start the seventh inning rally, first baseman Justin Webb got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and Hubbard reached via a fielder's choice. Catcher Chris Iannetta then walked and Cook singled down the third base line to load the bases. Hubbard then scored on a wild pitch to trim the lead to 3-1. After a free pass to pinch hitter Mell Adams loaded the bases once again, designated hitter Wes Moyer drew a walk of his own to plate Iannetta and cut the Pirate advantage to 3-2.
Noonan then entered for the Pirates to retire Corrado and preserve the Pirate lead through seven, but Hubbard's first home run as a Tar Heel tied the score at three the next inning.
Carolina starter Garry Bakker got off to a rough start, allowing six Pirate hits in the first two innings. Second baseman Anthony Seratelli got Seton Hall on the board with a RBI single to right in the second, and Bakker later balked across SHU right fielder Matt Cuttruff to push the Pirate lead to 2-0 after two innings.
akker settled down for the third and fourth innings, but Pirate shortstop Santiago Chi extended the Seton Hall lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to left on a 3-1 pitch in the top of the fifth. Bakker worked five innings and gave up seven hits and three earned runs. He also struck out five and walked two before being pulled in favor of senior Michael Gross to start the sixth.
A trio of senior relievers, Gross, Scott Senatore Benson, came on to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard after the fifth and allow Carolina to tie the score and eventually earn the win.
Seton Hall starter Tim Sabo blanked the Tar Heels for five innings, as he allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out five. In relief for Seton Hall, Bryan Haggerty worked a hitless 1.1 innings, and Buddy Hausmann worked one-third of an inning before giving way to Noonan.
Mangum and Hubbard had two hits apiece to lead Carolina. Nine different Pirates hit safely, led by Seratelli and Chi, who each had two hits and an RBI.
The series continues at 1 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Freshman righty Daniel Bard is slated to make his college debut Saturday, while sophomore Adam Kalkhof is expected to start game three.
