CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 24 ranked North Carolina men's swimming and diving team won 10 of 13 events, including the last five of the meet as the Tar Heels swept to a 167-74 over NC State Friday night at Koury Natatorium. Senior Yuri Suguiyama led the Tar Heels to the win with a pair of individual wins. He also swam a leg on the Tar Heels' winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
UNC improved to 7-4-1 overall on the season and 3-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. NC State is 7-5 overall and 2-5 in the ACC. Carolina closed its regular season Friday night and will next compete in the ACC Championships at Charlottesville, Va. on Feb. 25-28. State ends its regular season on Sunday against Tennessee in Raleigh.
Suguiyama led the Tar Heels with an impressive in the 1000 freestyle by posting a winning time of 9:10.23, ranking him as the third fastest individual this year in the ACC. The time was less than one second off Suguiyama's own school record in the event. Reid Owen finished second with a time of 9:12.08 to move into fifth place this year on the ACC depth chart. The time also moved Owen into fifth place on the Carolina historical depth chart behind only Suguiyama, Yann deFabrique, James Hamrick and David Monasterio -- all four of those venerated Tar Heel All-Americas. Suguiyama also took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.65.
Carolina swept both relay events while other Tar Heel winners were sophomore Chad Ames in the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Tristan Davidson in the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Josh Glasco in the 200-yard butterfly, junior John Hartmann in the 200-yard backstroke, senior Eric Poitras in three-meter diving and sophomore Patrick Woodruff in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Wolfpack was led by Cullen Jones who swept the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.
