Carolina Golfers Tied For 14th at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - North Carolina's men's golf team fired a 319 and is tied for 14th place after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship. Tar Heel senior Dustin Bray fired a one-over-par 73 and is tied for fifth place in the individual race.
South Carolina leads the field of 18 teams after firing an even par 288 on the first day. Florida is 11 shots back in second place at 299 while Tennessee is third at 303, Louisiana State is fourth at 305 and NCAA defending champion Clemson is in fifth place with a 306 total.
A trio of players is tied for the individual lead at one-under 71 * Texas' Jason Hartwick and South Carolina's Eirik Johansen and Jake Thompson. Camilo Villegas of Florida is alone in fourth place at even par 72. Carolina's Bray, from Asheboro, N.C., is one of seven players tied for fifth place at 73.
Carolina sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., carded an 80 and is tied for 48th place. Freshman Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, posted an 82 and is tied for 59th place while Ted Smith, a sophomore from Westlake, Ohio, shot 84 and is tied for 72nd place and Matt Crenshaw, a junior from Burlington, N.C., carded an 87 and is tied for 82nd place.
The 54-hole event which continues through Tuesday is being played at Sawgrass Country Club which features a par 72, 6,955-yard layout.
