UNC Finley PGA Professional Frank Maynard will conduct a two-day teaching marathon to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, 2004, at the UNC Finley Golf Course Practice Range.
Maynard wrote the following to describe his involvement in this charity event:
"Many of you may be aware of the recent story involving Bruce Edwards, Tom Watson's long-time caddy and friend. It has been a well-documented story, including an hour-long special on The Golf Channel entitled 'Courage on the Fairways.' Watson has worked hard to raise ALS awareness.
A good friend of mine named Jeff Julian was a PGA Professional in New England where I grew up and has had a dramatic effect on me personally and professionally.
In 1996, Jeff played 24 PGA events, becoming the only Vermont native to play on the PGA Tour. After four subsequent years on the Nike Tour, Jeff again earned his PGA Tour card for 2001. Jeff then started to experience problems with fatigue and slurred speech. Beginning in July 2001, Jeff and his wife, Kimberly, spent three months visiting specialists in between tournaments. In October, Jeff was diagnosed with ALS. Jeff was unable to retain his tour playing card for the following season.
Jeff was offered seven sponsor exemptions for 2002, and valiantly struggled through different tournaments, missing the cut but never giving up on his dream. I was privileged enough to watch Jeff play 36 holes at The Greater Greensboro Classic. Jeff, too, has made a great impact on ALS awareness and he and Kimberly currently reside in Missouri.
I feel a strong desire to help in ALS research because of the grace and courage with which Jeff, Bruce and others cope with this debilitating disease.
On May 1st and 2nd, I will be conducting a fundraising golf lesson marathon entitled "Teaching for a Cure." I will be teaching 24 30-minunte golf lessons each day. There is a $30 fee for each lesson with all proceeds going to Driving 4 Life, an ALS therapy development foundation.
