Ronnie Staines Named Waterscapes Student-Athlete Of The Week

Senior defenseman Ronnie Staines led Carolina's men's lacrosse team to an overtime win at 5th-ranked Duke and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for March 15-21, 2004.
Staines was at his best Saturday in No. 8 Carolina's 10-9 overtime win at No. 5 Duke. A senior from Severna Park, Md., Staines was assigned to Matt Danowski, Duke's leading scorer, and limited the outstanding freshman to two shots on goal and a single assist in the game. Staines also scooped up four ground balls as Carolina won the ground ball battle in the game, 51-31. It was the fifth time in six games this year that the Carolina defense has held its opponents to single digits in goals.

Gross earned the win in each of Carolina's two victories over No. 19 Virginia last weekend. He worked 1.2 hitless innings on both Friday and Saturday and combined for four strikeouts, zero walks and no runs allowed in 3.1 innings against the Cavaliers. With another hitless inning against Princeton on Wednesday, Gross did not allow a hit or walk in 4.1 innings on the week and struck out five. On the year, he is 2-0 and sports a 0.55 ERA and has struck out 20 batters in 16.1 innings.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
Jessi Perruquet

Jessi Perruquet concluded her distinguished swimming career at the University of North Carolina with All-America performances at the NCAA championships for the fourth successive year. Perruquet placed third in the 200-meter freestyle and 11th in the 100-meter freestyle while leading the Tar Heel team to a 23rd place national finish.
MEN'S TENNIS

Geoff Boyd swept his singles and doubles matches against UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington last week as the No. 19 ranked Tar Heels ran their record on the season to 15-2. Boyd combined with Nick Monroe for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles and then he defeated his singles opponents from UNCG and UNCW by a combined score of 24-1.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Rashad McCants
Sophomore, Forward

McCants scored 27 points in the Tar Heels' second round NCAA Tournament game against the University of Texas. McCants hit 11 field goals, including five from three-point range, and had three steals against the Longhorns. That followed a nine-point effort in the first round against Air Force, just the third time all year he did not score in double figures. McCants did have eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win over the Falcons.

Freshman Martin Ureta tied for eighth place at last weekend's Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, the first top-10 finish of his collegiate career. He posted two-under-par 70 in the first two rounds followed by a 75 in the final round for a one-under 215 total. The Tar Heels carded a 13th-place finish with an 892 total.

Young led UNC to a 7-1 record last week and powered the Tar Heels to the quarterfinals of the Buzz Classic. Young hit a home run in wins over Middle Tennessee State and Georgia Southern and for the week averaged .455 with seven runs batted in and had a slugging percentage of .769. She was named to the Buzz Classic All-Tournament team for her performance.
