CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore lefty Adam Kalkhof fanned eight batters in just five innings, and junior center fielder Chase Younts drove in a career-best four runs to lead No. 10 North Carolina (26-8, 8-4 ACC) to an 8-5 win over Charlotte (14-16) Wednesday at Tom and Lib Phillips Field. The Tar Heels, who move to 2-0 against the 49ers this year, are undefeated in midweek games.
Making his second consecutive start against Charlotte, Kalkhof (1-1) worked a season-long five innings en route to his first victory of the year. He allowed just one earned run on three hits and one walk. Five of Kalkhof's season-best eight strikeouts came over the third and fourth innings. Five Tar Heel hurlers combined to work the final four innings.
In just his sixth start of the year, Younts went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored and four RBI to spark the Tar Heel offense. He hit his first homer of the year in the second, and third baseman Sammy Hewitt and right fielder Marshall Hubbard added solo shots in the game. Hubbard's blast was his team-best 12th of the year. Right fielder Mike Daniel also went 2-for-4 with a career-high three runs scored.
Junior catcher Chris Iannetta singled to center in the first inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to 23 games.
Thanks to the homers from Hewitt and Younts, the Tar Heels claimed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Hewitt got Carolina on the board with his eighth of the year, a shot to deep left center. After right fielder Mike Daniel reached on a throwing error by Charlotte second baseman Michael Roane, Younts roped his second career homer over the right field wall for a three-run cushion.
Following an unearned run by Charlotte in the third, the Tar Heels came back with two more in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Greg Mangum drove in the first run of the frame with a bases-loaded single to left, and two batters later Iannetta came through with a sacrifice fly to deep right center to score Younts.
The 49ers got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo shot to right by right fielder Spencer Steedley, which trimmed the Tar Heel lead to 5-2.
Following Younts' RBI single in the fifth, Carolina picked up two more in the seventh. Hubbard laced a solo homer over the right field wall to lead off the frame. After a double by Daniel, Younts drove in his fourth run of the day on an infield single to short. Running on the play, Daniel alertly scored, and Younts took second on the throw home.
Charlotte trimmed two runs off the lead in the bottom of the inning. With one already in, senior lefty Scott Senatore entered with the bases loaded and just one out but recorded a pair of fly ball outs to get out of the jam with an 8-4 Carolina lead. Center fielder Adam Willard and first baseman Jamie Rusco drove in the 49er runs.
Charlotte starter Zachary Treadway (1-5) took the loss. He allowed three runs on two Tar Heel home runs in three innings. Treadway struck out four batters. The 49ers used six pitchers in the game. Four different Charlotte players had two hits to lead the offense.
Carolina returns to action this weekend when Clemson travels to Boshamer Stadium for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series. Games are schedule for 7 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
