CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore left-hander Adam Kalkhof allowed just one run on four hits over 7.1 innings to lead No. 18 North Carolina (28-10, 9-6 ACC) to a 3-2 victory over Elon (18-22) Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to a perfect 11-0 in midweek games. Carolina is now 21-4 at home this season.
Kalkhof (2-1) worked a season-high 7.1 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out five and retired the final eight batters he faced after allowing an RBI single to Elon right fielder Grant Rembert in the fifth. Kalkhof struck out five on the night. Over his last two starts, he has given up just seven hits and struck out 13 batters over 12.1 innings.
Senior righty Kevin Brower came on with two on and one out in the ninth and got the final two outs for his first save of the year.
Junior catcher Chris Iannetta, who had a 23-game hitting streak snapped against Clemson, was one of three Tar Heels to record multi-hit games. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Chase Younts and Marshall Hubbard also added two hits each. Hubbard pushed his current hitting streak to 10 games. Rembert went 3-for-4 to lead Elon at the plate.
Freshman third baseman Brack Massey put the Tar Heels up 1-0 in the third thanks to the first home run and first RBI of his young Tar Heel career. The shot to left off Elon starter Kory Radford was also just the third hit of the season for Massey, who made his first start at third base.
After loading the bases on a double by Hubbard and a pair of walks, Radford was lifted in favor of Justin Weeks in the fourth. Weeks got first baseman Wes Moyer to ground into a double play and shortstop Greg Mangum to fly out to left to end the inning with just one run on the board. Hubbard scored on Moyer's double-play grounder to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
Elon got on the board in the fifth when Rembert singled to right to drive in shortstop Paul Bennett, who led off the inning with a walk.
Carolina added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Mangum off the glove of Elon first baseman Evan Erickson. The hit scored Iannetta, who doubled to left center for his second hit of the night, and lifted the Tar Heel advantage to 3-1.
Down just two runs in the ninth, Elon put the tying runs on base with a pair of walks by Tar Heel reliever Jonathan Hovis. Brower then entered, and with two out, Elon catcher Drew Davis stole home while third baseman Chris Norwood was caught in a run down. Holding a 3-2 lead, Brower then got pinch hitter Tommy Hill to ground into a fielder's choice that ended the game.
Radford (0-2) took the loss for the Phoenix after allowing two runs on five hits in three innings.
The Tar Heels return to action Wednesday against UNC Greensboro. Action is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
