Men's Golf Finishes Fifth At ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. - North Carolina's men's golf team fired an 11-under-par 277 in the final round for an eight-under 856 total to finish in fifth place at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Clemson captured the team title for the second consecutive year with a 27-under 837 total after carding a 278 on the third day. Wake Forest was the runner up at 19-under 845 while Georgia Tech, who fired the day's low round of 274, finished third at 16-under 848 and NC State finished fourth with a 10-under 854 total.
Following Carolina in the team standings was Duke in sixth place at 857, Florida State finished seventh at 875, Virginia finished eighth at 882 and Maryland ninth with a 905 total.
Wake Forest freshman Sean Moore captured the individual title with an 11-under 205 total after firing rounds 70-67-68. He and Clemson's Jack Ferguson were tied going into the 18th hole where Ferguson carded a par five and Moore posted a birdie to clinch the win in regulation.
Clemson's Matt Hendrix and Georgia Tech's Nicholas Thompson were tied for third place at eight-under 208 while Bill Haas of Wake Forest finished fifth at 209 and Stephen Poole of Clemson finished sixth at 210. Carolina's Dustin Bray, a senior from nearby Asheboro, and NC State's Garry Hill tied for seventh at five-under 211.
ray's final round of five-under 67, was highlighted by a 50-yard chip-in for an eagle three on the final hole. That pushed the Tar Heels one shot ahead of Duke and clinched the men's golf Carlyle Cup point for the year.
In addition to Bray, the Tar Heels had two other players finish in the top 20 and four players fired sub-par rounds on the final day. Sophomore Ted Smith tied for 15th place after firing a three-under 69 in the final round for a 214 total. Sophomore Kevin Silva tied for 19th at 216 after posting a two-under 70 on Sunday. Junior Matt Crenshaw tallied a one-under 71 for a 218 total and tied for 21st place while freshman Martin Ureta carded a one-over 73.
The 54-hole event was played at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point which featured a demanding par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
