CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Chase Younts, Matt Ellington and Mell Adams each homered, and freshman righty Robert Woodard fired six shutout innings to lead No. 18 North Carolina (29-10) to a 10-3 win over UNC Greensboro (23-10-1) Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels scored double-digit runs for the first time since April 7 en route to their 13th consecutive midweek victory.
Younts' second inning home run put the Tar Heels up 2-0, while solo shots from Ellington and Adams in the fifth gave Carolina a 10-0 lead. Hitless in his first five at-bats in April, Adams went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs scored to pace the Tar Heel offense.
Right fielder Marshall Hubbard singled in the second to push his hitting streak to 11 games. He had a 12-game hitting streak from February 29 to March 17.
Making his first start since March 24, Woodard worked a season-high six innings to run his record to 4-1 on the year. He allowed just four hits and two walks, while recording a career-best six strikeouts. Senior Scott Manshack worked two scoreless innings in just his second appearance of the year.
Highlighted by a base-clearing double by catcher Chris Iannetta, the Tar Heels put up eight runs with two outs in the second. After Adams singled to start the rally, Younts homered to right to give Carolina a 2-0 lead. Third baseman Sammy Hewitt followed that up with a triple to left center, and Bryan Steed walked and Greg Mangum was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Left fielder Jay Cox drew a walk to drive in Hewitt, and right fielder Marshall Hubbard singled to right to push the lead to 4-0. Iannetta then doubled off the right field fence to drive in three runs. He later scored on a throwing error by UNCG third baseman Chris Mason for the eighth and final run of the inning.
Thanks to the solo homers by Ellington and Adams on back-to-back pitches from UNCG reliever Ryan Falcon in the fifth, Carolina pushed its lead to 10-0. Ellington's blast to right was his second of the year, while Adams drove the next pitch over the left field wall for his third homer of the season.
UNCG picked up three runs in the ninth after Carolina reliever Scott Senatore walked the bases loaded. Michael Gross then balked in a run, and Spartans closed out the scoring on a sacrifice fly and a RBI groundout.
Spartan starter Nick Starnes (2-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks in just 1.2 innings. UNC Greensboro used eight pitchers in the game.
The Tar Heels return action this weekend with a three-game series at Duke. Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
