Charlottesville, Va. - The North Carolina Tar Heels fired a three round total score of 876 to capture third place at the 2004 Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic held at Birdwood Golf Course. UNC-Wilmington won the team championship with a final score of 870 and Furman finished in a close second, with a score of 871.
Carolina senior Dustin Bray finished the day with a one over par score of 73, which put him in a deadlock for first place with the Italian National Team's Andrea Signor. Signor clinched the individual title after a two-putt from eight feet in a playoff hole on the 17th.
"To have two players like (UNC's) Dustin Bray and (Italy's) Andrea Signor tied, Dustin Bray, as I said before the tournament started, was probably the top player in the field," said Virginia coach Mike Moraghan. "Andrea Signor, representing Italy, was pretty amazing with it coming down to a tie. How could you write a better finish than to have Andrea Signor from Italy win the Andrea Brotto tournament. It was a great event."
Tar Heel golfer Martin Ureta also finished well with a final score of 217, placing him in a four-way tie for fourth. But, the best shot of the day came from North Carolina's Kevin Silva, who fired his first career hole-in-one on the par four, 205-yard eighth hole.
"It was just a five-iron," Silva said. "I just hit it perfectly; it was going right at the hole the whole time. I saw it go in. It was awesome."
The Tar Heels return to action Thursday, May 20 to compete in the 2004 NCAA Regionals.
