Tar Heel Women's Tennis Fights Hard For 5-2 Win Over Georgia Tech

The University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated Georgia Tech 5-2 on Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The No. 12 Tar Heels won all three doubles matches for the first point from the No. 39 Yellow Jackets. UNC (18-6, 4-3 ACC) went on to get victories in four of six singles matches against Georgia Tech (11-8, 4-3 ACC) for the 5-2 team win.
To begin the afternoon, North Carolina's doubles teams finished in order as juniors Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline won the No. 1 seed match 8-4 against Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant. Mojzis and Cline are ranked 23rd nationally and have compiled a record of 23-9, giving them the most doubles wins in a season in Tar Heel history.
At the No. 2 seed, UNC seniors Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn took the match against Lyndsay Shosho and Maria Nieto 8-3. Bairos and Bunn are now 8-1 together and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina freshman duo Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long completed the sweep with an 8-7(5) victory over Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio. Anundsen and Long are 6-0 in ACC play and 10-2 overall when playing together.
In singles play, #28 Mojzis easily defeated #57 Lindsay Shosho 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 seed. Mojzis moves on to 23-14 on the year and 4-3 in the ACC. She has been rescheduled to appear on Fox Sports Net's ACC Live on Monday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. in an interview with Jenn Hildreth.
Next to finish was Tar Heel freshman Caitlin Collins playing at the three seed. Collins (15-14, 2-5 ACC) beat Lindsey Stauss 6-4, 6-2.
To clinch the match for the Tar Heels, Anundsen defeated Grant in the No. 4 seed match for UNC's fourth point of the day. Anundsen has compiled a team-high 26 wins over the year with only eight losses. The first-year player is also 5-2 in ACC play. In the No. 6 seed match, Long won in three sets against Nieto for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 come-from-behind victory. Long is now 18-8 and 5-0 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels will play #16 Clemson on Saturday in the final home and regular season match. The Tigers, 17-3 overall and an undefeated 6-0 in the ACC, finish its season at Duke on Sunday. Start time for the UNC-Clemson match is 11 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
