CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Center fielder Chase Younts went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, and senior Scott Manshack struck out the side in the ninth to lead No. 14 North Carolina (37-15) to a 10-1 win over Davidson (18-29) Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Younts, first baseman Wes Moyer and catcher Chris Iannetta each homered for the Tar Heels, who are now 25-6 at home this season.
Freshman starter Robert Woodard (6-2) scattered four hits over four scoreless innings to earn the win in a predetermined staff day for Carolina, which has allowed just three earned runs over the last four games. With Woodard's victory, 19 of the Tar Heels' 37 wins have come from freshmen. Relievers Jonathan Hovis, Bryan Phillips, Kevin Brower and Manshack worked the final five innings for Carolina. Hovis, who worked two innings, and Manshack each struck out three batters.
Davidson starter Rob Wilson, prep teammate of Woodard's at Charlotte's Myers Park High School, fell to 4-5 with the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.
After putting the Tar Heels up 1-0 with a solo home run in the first, Younts drove in two more runs with a single up the middle in the fourth. His second hit of the night scored second baseman Bryan Steed and third baseman Justin Webb to lift Carolina to a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Left fielder Mike Daniel started the rally with a single up the middle. Steed followed with a walk, and Webb then doubled to left to drive in Daniel. After Greg Mangum grounded out to first, Younts came through with the two-run single.
Davidson got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, trimming the lead to 4-1. Wildcat left fielder Brett Peiffer reached on a bunt single toward third, but Tar Heel reliever Jonathan Hovis made an errant throw to first, allowing Peiffer to reach second. Shortstop Eli Benefield then singled to left center to drive in the run.
Moyer, who had two multi-hit games at Miami last weekend, gave Carolina a 6-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to right, his first of the season. The hit scored Daniel, who doubled to center with two out to start the rally.
Iannetta then hit a three-run shot to left center in the sixth to push the lead to 9-1. The homer was 11th of the season, which ties Sammy Hewitt for second on the team. Iannetta, who was hitless in nine at bats against the Hurricanes last weekend, now has 60 RBI on the year. The homer scored Mangum, who reached on an error, and Younts, who singled for his third hit of the night.
Carolina added an unearned run in the eighth on a RBI groundout by Jay Cox.
Daniel was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Davidson's Alex Entrekin also added two hits.
The Tar Heels close out the regular season with a three-game set against NC State beginning Thursday. Games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
