Tar Heels Fall To No. 1 Johns Hopkins In NCAA Lacrosse Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Eighth-seeded North Carolina was outscored by top-seeded Johns Hopkins 6-2 in the second quarter Saturday afternoon and the Blue Jays went on to beat the Tar Heels 15-9 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament at Scott Stadium on the University of Virginia campus. Johns Hopkins (13-1) advance to the NCAA semifinals and will play next Saturday at 11:30 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. against either Georgetown or Syracuse. UNC saw its best season since 1996 finish with a 10-5 mark.
Conor Ford led the Blue Jays with five goals, equaling his career high. Kyle Harrison and Matt Rewkowski had three goals each and Kevin Boland two goals.
UNC had eight different goals scorers with junior attackman Jed Prossner leading the way with two goals and one assist.
Kevin Frew had another magnificent day in the faceoff circle for UNC as he won 17 of 28 faceoffs and claimed 13 ground balls. The 13 ground balls equaled his career high in a game, the fifth time he has done that this season and he will win the NCAA statistics title for most ground balls in the nation this season.
Frew finished 2004 with a school record 219 faceoffs victories. He also established the career record at Carolina for faceoff wins in the game with a total of 446, passing the 429 by Jude Collins (1993-96) he had tied last week. Frew's 143 ground balls are the second most in a season in UNC history, behind only 160 by Collins in 1996.
The Blue Jays jumped on top 2:30 into the match as midfielder Kyle Harrison beat Tar Heel goalkeeper Paul Spellman with a high, hard shot. Carolina responded just 13 seconds later as senior midfielder Kevin Frew won the faceoff and found sophomore midfielder Andrew McElduff streaking down the middle of the field unchecked. McElduff beat Blue Jay goalkeeper Scott Smith to tie the score at 1-1.
UNC retook the lead with 9:51 left in the first quarter as junior attackman Jed Prossner finished off a Tar Heel fast break, assisted by Andrew McElduff. The Blue Jays tied the score at 2-2 before the end of the first quarter as midfielder Matt Rewkowksi scored off an assist by Kevin Boland with 3:36 left in the period.
The Tar Heels fell victim to a 6-2 Hopkins scoring run in the second quarter as the Blue Jays forged an 8-4 lead at halftime. Senior attackman Conor Ford led the assault for the Blue Jays in the second quarter with a quartet of goals. Rewkowksi drove the right side to score unassisted for the Jays at 13:50 and 27 seconds later Joe McDermott drove the left side to make it 4-2 in favor of Hopkins.
Carolina drew back within 4-3 when sophomore attackman Ryan Blair scored at 11:57 but then Ford took over the JHU as scored scored back to back goals at 10:41 and 9:47, assisted by Harrison and Greg Peyser, respectively. UNC senior midfielder Dave Duffy pulled the Tar Heels to within 6-4 at the 3:42 mark but the Tar Heels turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Ford scored a fast break goal at 3:10, assisted by Benson Erwin. Ford finished off the first half scoring at 1:32 of the first half as he took a pass from Rewkowksi and scored on a bounce shot.
Hopkins quickly pushed its lead to 9-4 just 1:37 into the second half as Ford scored his fifth goal in a road on an extra-man situation, assisted by Jake Byrne. Carolina then found its legs and within five minutes had cut the Hopkins lead to two goals. Lance Zimmerman scored for the Tar Heels at 10:55 as he took a feed from Prossner on the crease to score past Smith. Just 40 seconds later, Prossner scored out top, assisted by Duffy. Then at 8:42, senior attackman Andrew Lucas pivoted past a defender on the right side and powered a shot past Smith.
ut Hopkins won the ensuing faceoff and regained the momentum as Kyle Harrison drove to the right and scored to make it 10-7. Then with 6:17 left in the quarter, Benson Erwin rolled the crease to make it 11-7.
Hopkins regained a five-goal lead at 12-7 when Kevin Boland scored into the upper left of the cage with 12:54 left in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels answered with an extra-man goal by Mike McCall, assisted by Ryan Blair at 11:03 before the Blue Jays ran off three straight goals to put the game away with Kyle Harrison scoring a man-down goal at 7:48, Kevin Boland a man-up goal at 4:39 and Matt Rewkowksi adding his third goal at 2:32. UNC finished the scoring with a man-up goal by Bryant Will with 41 seconds remaining, assisted by Lance Zimmerman.
Hopkins outshot the Tar Heels 42-37 and had a slight edge in ground balls at 41-39. Paul Spellman finished with 13 saves for UNC while Scott Smith had 12 for the Blue Jays.
