Tar Heel Golfers Finish 29th At NCAA Championship

Hot Springs, Va. - Carolina's men's golf team struggled in the third round of the NCAA Championship carding a 27-over-par 307 for an 892 total and concludes its season with a 29th-place finish. The field was cut to the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on those 15 teams for the final round.
UCLA fired a five-under-par 275, the low round of the day, for a seven-over 847 total to grab the lead going into the final round. Kentucky is five strokes back in second place with an 852 total after carding a three-over 283 on Thursday. California, which led after the first two rounds, posted a 287 for an 855 total and is in third place. Washington and Arizona are tied for fourth with 856 totals while top-ranked Florida is sixth at 858.
Georgia, Purdue and Southern California were tied for 15th place at the conclusion of the third round. A playoff was held and Purdue captured the 15th spot to advance to Friday's final round.
Ryan Moore of UNLV fired a six-under 64 for a nine-under 201 total to grab the individual lead. Chris Nallen of Arizona is two strokes back in second place with a 203 total after carding a three-under 67. Matt Wells of Kentucky is third with a 204 total while Wake Forest's Bill Haas and UCLA's Travis Johnson are tied for fourth place with five-under 205 totals. Michael Putnam of Pepperdine is in sixth place with a 206 total and John Holmes of Kentucky is seventh at 207.
A trio of Carolina players carded a six-over 76 in the third round - Dustin Bray, Ted Smith and Martin Ureta. Ureta, a freshman from Santiago, Chile, finished with a 219 total and is tied for 55th place. Smith, a sophomore from Westlake, Ohio, is tied for 123rd with a 226 total while Bray, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., tallied a 227 total and is tied for 130th. Sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., is tied for 105th with a 224 total after posting an 81 and junior Matt Crenshaw, from Burlington, N.C., tallied a 230 total and is tied for 144th after carding a third-round 79.
The final round of the 72-hole event will be played Friday at the Homestead Resort's Cascades Course which features a par 70, 6,679-yard layout.
