Two North Carolina women's basketball players are among 31 student-athletes announced Tuesday as preseason candidates for the 2005 State Farm Wade Trophy, which honors the Division I Player of the Year. Rising UNC sophomores Ivory Latta and Camille Little both were named to the list.
Preseason candidates, which were selected by a national awards committee consisting of coaches, journalists and administrators, were selected based on several criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
The Tar Heels are two of just four sophomores on the list.
Little, the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, led UNC in scoring last season with 14.3 points per game and ranked second in rebounding with an average of 7.9 per game. The 6-1 forward was the first Tar Heel freshman to be named first-team All-ACC.
Latta ranked a close second in scoring with 14.0 points per game and was named to the All-ACC second team. The Tar Heels' starting point guard, she led the team in minutes played with 32.6 per game.
A total of three ACC players were named to the Wade Watch list, with Duke's Monique Currie joining Latta and Little. The Big 12 had more candidates than any other conference with seven and the Big East followed with five. The SEC and PAC-10 each had four players, Conference USA joined the ACC with three players and the Big Ten had two. The Big South, Big West and Mountain West each had one player on the list.
"The 2004-05 State Farm Wade Trophy preseason list is an example of how dynamic and exciting the game of women's college basketball has become," said Jeanne Lenti-Ponsetto, Chair of the State Farm Wade Trophy Committee and athletic director at DePaul. "These 31 student-athletes represent the best and brightest and we look forward to an outstanding year of college women's basketball."
The 2004 Wade Trophy was won by Duke's Alana Beard. The award is now in its 28th year.
The 2005 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced during the WBCA National Convention held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind., April 2-5, 2005.
