NORTH CAROLINA POSTGAME NOTES VS. VIRGINIA
Just one game after allowing a school-record 69 points at Louisville, the Tar Heels held Virginia to five points. This was the fewest points allowed by the Tar Heels since a 38-3 win at Clemson on Oct. 20, 2001.
Carolina's 7-5 win marked the fewest points by the Tar Heels in a win since a 7-3 victory over Wake Forest on October 23, 1971 (almost 34 years to the day).
The 12 points between the two teams marked the fewest points in a Carolina football game since the Tar Heels beat Texas Tech in Lubbock, 9-3, on Sept. 13, 1980.
This was also the fewest points combined in the UNC-Virginia series since a 12-0 Tar Heel win in Charlottesville in 1969.
Virginia had 199 yards of total offense, its lowest figure of the season. The previous low was 324 against Duke. The Cavaliers were also held to a season-low five points, one week after scoring 26 in a win over Florida State. It is the lowest points since UVa had three against Florida State on Oct. 16, 2004.
The Carolina defense dominated the first quarter, holding Virginia to just 23 yards of total offense and zero first downs. For the game, Virginia had 14 first downs, the fewest allowed by the Tar Heels (16 at NC State) this year.
Carolina held Virginia to 199 yards of total offense, the first time UNC has held an opponent under 200 yards since Wake Forest gained 162 yards in 2000.
Carolina rushed for a season-high 172 yards. The previous high for rushing yards was 144 at NC State.
In just his second game of the season, junior tailback Ronnie McGill carried 23 times for 118 yards, his first 100-yard effort since he went for 133 in the 2004 season opener versus William & Mary. McGill now has three 100-yard games in his career. Sophomore Barrington Edwards added 57 yards on 13 carries.
Senior fullback Rikki Cook scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard pass from Matt Baker late in the first quarter. The reception was also the first of the season for Cook. Baker has thrown touchdown passes to six different receivers this season.
Sophomore defensive tackle Shelton Bynum recorded his first career sack with a first quarter stop of Marques Hagans.
Sophomore Durell Mapp made his first career start at middle linebacker.
Safety Kareen Taylor registered his first solo sack of his career on a key third-down play in the fourth quarter. Virginia had the ball 3rd-and-10 at the UNC 38 with five minutes to play when Taylor sacked Hagans.
Cornerback Cedrick Holt's fourth-quarter interception with 1:41 to play at the UNC 23 yard-line was his second career interception and second of the season. His other interception was in the win over Utah. Holt had six solo stops among his seven tackles and added a pass breakup on a deep throw near the end zone.
The illegal kick by Mike Mason on what turned out to be the second-to-last play of the game nullified a 67-yard punt by David Wooldridge. That would have been the longest punt of his career (he had a 61-yarder in 2003 and a 60-yarder in 2004).
This is Carolina's first win over the Cavaliers since 2001, ending a three-game losing streak. The Tar Heels now lead the series, 57-49-4.
Carolina held Virginia to 90 rushing yards, the second time in six games this year an opponent has rushed for under 100 yards (13 by NC State).
Carolina limited Marques Hagans to a season-low 109 passing yards. His previous low passing figure this year was 145 against Syracuse.
Carolina quarterback Matt Baker tied his season-low for completions with 13 (also at NC State) and passed for 98 yards. His previous low yardage total this year was 177 against NC State.
