Scouting the Flames
Liberty returns eight letterwinners, including starter Allyson Fasnacht, from the 2004-05 team that won the program's ninth consecutive Big South Conference title and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The Flames finished the season 26-7 and were ranked No. 21 in the final coaches' poll of the season.
Gone from that squad are four starters, including 6-8 center Katie Feenstra, who led the NCAA in field goal percentage last season and was the eighth pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft.
Fasnacht, who started 20 games last season as a freshman, is the most experienced returner on a roster with no seniors. In the team's season opener Friday against Virginia Union, freshman Megan Frazee led the way with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the 74-59 win. Sophomore guard Courtney Watkins scored 12 points and junior forward Karolina Piotrkiewicz had 10 rebounds.
The Flames are coached by Carey Green, who is in his eighth season at Liberty. Prior to that, he spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson.
UNC vs. Liberty
North Carolina and Liberty have never met in women's basketball, but UNC is 31-5 all-time against the current members of the Big South Conference.
Last time out for UNC
Nov. 18: No. 7 UNC 86, Davidson 48
Junior guard Ivory Latta led the way with 20 points and seven assists and all 14 players on the roster scored as the Tar Heels opened the season with an 86-48 win over Davidson at Carmichael Auditorium. Sophomore Erlana Larkins had 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting and freshman Rashanda McCants scored nine points with six rebounds and four assists in her UNC debut. Another freshman, Christina Dewitt, led the team in rebounding with nine and added eight points.
Carolina shot 44.2 percent from the field (34-77), but just 50 percent (9-18) from the foul line. Davidson hit 27.6 percent of its shots, including a 1-for-16 night from three-point range.
The Tar Heels had 25 assists, equal to last year's season high, which was achieved on two occasions.
Looking ahead to the Caribbean Classic
Following Monday's game against Liberty, UNC turns its attention to the Caribbean Classic, where the Tar Heels will face Arizona State on Friday and TCU on Saturday. Other teams participating in the event are defending NCAA Champion Baylor, California, Marshall and Mississippi State.
The teams will stay and play their games at the Aventura Spa Palace resort in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico, about 90 minutes south of Cancun. The event was to take place at a resort in Cancun, but was moved after the original site suffered damage from Hurricane Wilma.
Caribbean Classic action starts on Thursday night when California plays Marshall. On Friday, UNC and Arizona State open the action with a 1:40 p.m. tipoff, followed by TCU vs. Mississippi State at 4:10. On Saturday, Baylor plays Cal at 1:40 p.m., followed by UNC vs. TCU at 4:10 and Mississippi State vs. Arizona State at 7:10. Marshall and Baylor close out the event with a Sunday afternoon game. (All times local to Cancun, which is in the Central time zone.)
The games will mark the first time that North Carolina has played in Mexico and the first time that the Tar Heels have played a regular-season game outside the U.S.
