CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior left-hander Adam Kalkhof fired 5.2 scoreless innings to lead North Carolina to a third consecutive shutout for the first time in 83 years, as the Tar Heels (3-0) posted a 5-0 win over Seton Hall (0-2) Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina has set a school record with 27 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season.
The Tar Heels, who had never recorded three consecutive shutouts to open the season until this year, last had back-to-back-to-back shutouts in 1922, when Carolina defeated Virginia, 6-0, 4-0 and 7-0 in consecutive games.
Making his first start of the season, Kalkhof (1-0) fanned five and allowed just four hits and no walks over 5.2 innings. Senior Bryan Phillips, junior Jonathan Hovis and redshirt sophomore Matt Danford combined for 3.1 for three shutout innings out of the bullpen. In all, Carolina relievers have allowed just two hits in 10.2 innings on the young season.
After scoring 17 runs on 21 hits Friday, Carolina picked up where it left off and took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first. Walks to second baseman Greg Mangum and right fielder Jay Cox put two on. Both runners took third on a groundout by designated hitter Matt Ellington, and Mangum then scored when SHU third baseman Mark Pappas booted a grounder off the bat of first baseman Chad Flack.
The Tar Heels manufactured two more runs in the second to push the advantage to 3-0. A walk to shortstop Josh Horton and a single by center fielder Chase Younts put runners on the corners, and Mangum followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Horton. Two batters later, Cox singled to left to score Younts and drive in his fourth run of the season.
After being shutdown for four innings by Haggerty, Carolina added a run in the seventh on Mangum's second sac fly of the afternoon. Pinch hitter Blair Waggett was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and took third on two wild pitches from SHU reliever Luis Fernandez before Mangum flied out to center to drive in his second run of the day. The Tar Heels picked up their final run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by pinch hitter Matt Spencer and Daniel, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Carolina at the plate.
Mangum drove in two runs without a hit and scored once.
Seton Hall starter Jake Haggerty (0-1) pitched well in the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five and retired the final 11 batters he faced.
Pappas and designated hitter John Walsh led the Pirates, who outhit UNC 6-5, with two hits each. SHU threatened in both the second and fourth innings, putting runners on second and third in both frames, but Kalkhof was able to work out the jam in both cases, getting a strikeout with two out in the second and a grounder back to the mound to end the fourth.
The Tar Heels and Pirates wrap up the three-game series at noon Sunday. The start time was moved up from the original 1:30 p.m. start due to the threat of inclement weather.
