CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ninth-ranked Miami scored 10 runs over the first three innings and tacked on seven in the sixth to cruise to 17-7 win over No. 7 North Carolina (28-7, 11-3 ACC) in game one of an Atlantic Coast Conference series Friday at Boshamer Stadium. The Hurricanes' (28-9, 12-4 ACC) 17 runs were the most allowed by the Tar Heels since a 19-5 loss to Georgia Tech on May 12, 2001.
Miami righty Cesar Carrillo improved to 9-0 this season and 21-0 in his career but allowed a season-high four earned runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out just one. Reliever Manny Miguelez earned his first save of the season with three innings of relief.
Carolina left-hander Andrew Miller (7 -1) had the shortest start of his career, as he went just 2.1 innings and allowed career highs of nine runs and seven earned runs. He gave up just three hits, including his first home run allowed of the season, but walked a career-high eight batters. Four Tar Heel relievers combined to work the final 6.2 innings, including freshman Tyler Trice, who went two scoreless innings.
Miami designated hitter Alex Garabedian was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and five runs batted in to lead the 12-hit Hurricane attack. Center fielder Danny Figueroa was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and third baseman Ryan Braun and left fielder Jon Jay each drove in two runs for Miami.
Carolina freshman first baseman Chad Flack went 2-for-4 with an RBI double to extend his career-best hitting streak to 10 games and his run of multi-hit games to seven straight. Freshman Seth Williams hit his team-best eighth home run of the season in the seventh, and designated hitter Matt Ellington drove in two with a first inning double.
Despite getting just one hit in the inning, Miami scored twice in the first to take an early lead. Center fielder Danny Figueroa led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Jay. Right fielder Paco Figueroa, who walked, then scored on a passed ball for the second run of the frame.
Trailing 2-0 after just a half an inning, the Tar Heels picked up three in the first to claim a brief lead. Ellington drove in second baseman Greg Mangum and catcher Justin Webb with a double to center, and the third run scored when Miami second baseman Walter Diaz dropped a liner off the bat of UNC right fielder Jay Cox.
The Hurricanes then batted around in the second to take a 6-3 lead on the strength of the three-run home run from Garabedian. Miller walked five men in the inning, and the Tar Heels committed two errors, the second of which allowed Miami's fourth run of the inning to score.
The Hurricanes also scored four in the third to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Shortstop Roger Tomas drove in the first run with a triple to right center, and both Figueroas followed with RBI doubles. A sac fly by Braun drove in the 10th run of the day for the Canes.
Carolina trimmed the lead to five with two runs in the fifth, as Flack drove in the first run with his double down the left field line, and two batters later Cox singled to right to drive home the second run. Mangum drew a lead off walk, and senior catcher Justin Webb singled to start the scoring rally.
Already holding a five-run cushion, Miami added seven runs on six hits in the sixth. The Hurricanes sent 12 men to the plate, with Garabedian roping a two-run single for his fourth and fifth RBI of the afternoon. Jay, Diaz and catcher Eddy Rodriguez also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
Williams' pinch-hit two-run home run in the seventh cut the lead to 17-7. Pinch hitter Craig Corrado reached on Miami's third error of the day before Williams hit a shot over the wall in right center for his eighth home run in just 78 at-bats.
Carolina's loss snapped a nine-game unbeaten streak in ACC play and dropped its home record to 23-2. Miami is the first conference team to post a win at Boshamer Stadium this season.
The series concludes with games at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Saturday's game will broadcasted by ESPN2, while Sunday's game will be carried by ESPN2 tape-delayed at 4 p.m.
