DURHAM, N.C. - Junior striker Heather O'Reilly had a goal and two assists and Duke adidas Classic Offensive Most Valuable Player Lindsay Tarpley scored once to lead No. 1 North Carolina to a 4-0 victory over Alabama-Birmingham Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Four different Tar Heels scored goals in the match and O'Reilly, Jaime Gilbert and Elizabeth Guess each had two assists as Carolina did all its scoring in the final 16 minutes of the match.
Senior midfielder Lori Chalupny, senior midfielder Kacey White and freshman midfielder Yael Averbuch joined Tarpley as members of the Duke adidas Classic All-Tournament Team. North Carolina improved to 8-0 on the season in its final non-conference game of the 2005 season. UAB fell to 3-5 with the loss.
Earlier in the day the host Blue Devils defeated San Diego 5-0. In Friday's matches, UNC downed San Diego 3-0 and Duke edged UAB 1-0. Carolina had four different players find the back of the net and five different players record assists in Sunday's victory. Senior goalkeeper Aly Winget went the distance in goal to record her fourth solo shutout of the season and the 31st of her career. Winget is now three solo shutouts short of equalling the Atlantic Coast Conference record for career solo goalkeeper shutouts which is 34 shared by Duke's Melissa Carr and Clemson's Katie Carson.
UNC (No. 1 in all four national polls) outshot the Blazers by a staggering 39-1 total but all that meant nothing when the match was still scoreless even after Carolina's 29th shot of the match.
Finally, at 74:32, the Tar Heels broke through by scoring a goal off a corner kick. Kacey White launched the corner kick from the right side and junior forward Elizabeth Guess headed it on to the mouth of the goal where senior defender Kendall Fletcher tapped it in past UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis. Forbis was stellar all day with 16 saves overall for the Blazers and it took UNC 30 shots to get a goal past her. Fletcher's goal was her third of the year and her first game-winner.
It took just a little over a minute for UNC to improve its lead to 2-0 with the Tar Heels scoring on its first shot after scoring the initial goal. Sophomore defender Robyn Gayle sent a pass up the left side that sophomore forward Jaime Gilbert carried into the deep left corner before she crossed far post to an onrushing O'Reilly who tapped home her ninth goal of the season.
Carolina dented the scoreboard twice more with Kacey White tallying her first goal of the season at 86:46. White previously had 10 assists this season, leading the nation in that category. White finished her scoring opportunity with a shot from the right side of the box that beat Forbis far post. Both Jaime Gilbert and Heather O'Reilly assisted on the goal. The final score came at 87:59 as Lindsay Tarpley scored her third goal of the season, all in the last four matches, with assists by O'Reilly and Guess. Tarpley shot from about 10 yards out in front of the goal, beating reserve goalkeeper Julie McFarlane to her left.
O'Reilly's four points boosted her team-leading total to 25 this season, followed by Gilbert with 15 points, Guess with 13 points, White with 12 points and Chalupny with 11 points.
The Tar Heels are next on the pitch on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles, like the Tar Heels, are an undefeated and untied team. FSU has a 7-0 record heading into the Thursday game and was ranked No. 9 by Soccer Buzz and No. 10 by Soccer America this week. UNC will continue its Florida road trip next Sunday playing at Miami at 1 p.m.
