CHAPEL HILL --- Coming off a 33-2 season that saw them reach the Final Four for the second time in school history and claim a second straight Atlantic Coast Conference title, the North Carolina Tar Heels open the 2006-07 campaign Friday night against East Tennessee State. Tip is set for 9 p.m. The game will also open the season for ETSU.
CAROLINA SEASON OPENERS
The Tar Heels will look to post their sixth straight win in a season opener Friday night.
Carolina last lost its opener in 2000, when the Tar Heels fell to Buffalo 95-89.
That also marks the last time UNC did not play its opener in Chapel Hill.
Carolina is 27-5 all-time in season openers, 16-4 under Sylvia Hatchell.
NOTING THE LADY BUCS
East Tennessee State returns three starters from last year's 18-10 squad that finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
ETSU lost its top two scorers from a year ago - B.J. Banjo (19.1 ppg) and Candace Gibson (12.3 ppg).
Carolina holds a 9-0 advantage in the all-time series with ETSU, including a 7-0 mark in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels and Lady Bucs last met in 2002, with UNC claiming a 106-40 victory at Carmichael.
The Lady Bucs are coached by Karen Kemp, who is starting her 13th season in Johnson City.
