Georgetown Edges Tar Heels, 8-7, In Overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Brittany Baschuk gathered her own rebound off a blocked shot and scored with 2:15 left in overtime to give Georgetown a come-from-behind, 8-7 win over North Carolina on Friday at Multi-Sport Field on the Georgetown campus. With the win, Georgetown, ranked No. 4 in this week's IWLCA national poll, improves to 7-1 this season. No. 5 Carolina saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 7-3 on the season.
Meg Freshwater had two goals for Carolina, while Stephanie Scurachio had a goal and an assist.
After Carolina had overcome an early 3-0 deficit to take a 6-3 lead, Georgetown came back from a 7-4 deficit in the game's final 18-plus minutes to win. The Hoyas gathered 39 ground balls to Carolina's 21 and won 11 of the game's 19 draw controls, including all three in overtime.
In the first half, the Hoyas jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of action. Sara Zorzi scored the game's first goal unassisted at the 24:04 mark. Paige Andrews followed with a goal off a Coco Stanwick assist at 23:31. Stanwick scored three minutes later at 20:39 off a Zorzi assist to make it 3-0 Georgetown.
Carolina closed out the first half with four straight goals for a 4-3 lead at the break. Overall, the Tar Heels scored six in a row after they also scored the first two goals of the second half. Five different UNC players scored during the six-score outburst, starting with three straight goals by Jess Allen, Melissa McCarthy and Freshwater. Katie Brooks scored off a Scurachio assist with just 37 seconds left in the opening period.
Early in the second half, Brooke Dieringer scored a free position goal at 26:18 to make it 5-3, and Freshwater scored her second goal of the game at 25:06 to make it 6-3. Andrews broke the Carolina scoring run with a goal off a Patty Piotrowicz assist at the 22:55 mark of the second half. Scurachio responded with a goal off a Christina Juras assist at 18:43 to make it 7-4 Tar Heels.
The Hoya comeback began eight minutes later when Schuyler Sutton scored a free position goal at 10:41 to cut the Tar Heel lead to 7-5. Stanwick scored a free position goal to make it 7-6 with 8:36 left to play and Lucy Poole scored from the far right wing to tie the score with 5:22 left to play. Carolina had two opportunities to retake the lead in the final moments but Dieringer had a shot hit the post and Scurachio had a shot go high in the final 1:07 of action.
The two teams were scoreless in the first three minutes of overtime, although Stanwick had a point-blank shot hit the post with 0:04 left in the first three minutes of extra time.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Stanford. The game will be played on the Georgetown campus in Washington, D.C.
