WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-2 halftime lead and cruised to a 12-5 win over Stanford on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Georgetown University.
"We weren't pleased with our offensive performance in the second half, but we played well overall and we'll certainly take the win," head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "From early in the game, I thought we controlled the action by maintaining possession and keeping the pressure on Stanford."
Senior Stephanie Scurachio, Carolina's leading scorer this season, led the Tar Heels to the win with three goals and one assist for a team-high four points. Scurachio now has 23 points and nine assists this season, both of which are team highs.
Junior Brooke Dieringer had two goals and an assist for UNC, while junior Melissa McCarthy had two assists, sophomore Erica LaGrow had two goals and freshman Kelly Taylor had a goal and an assist.
Other individual scorers for Carolina included junior Christina Juras (one goal), junior Jess Allen (one goal), sophomore Jamie Hanssen (one assist), freshman Chelsea Parks (one goal) and sophomore Meg Freshwater (one goal)
Carolina (8-3), ranked No. 5 this week in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, bounced back from Friday afternoon's 8-7 overtime loss at No. 4 Georgetown with Sunday's victory. No. 16 Stanford, which lost at Dartmouth on Thursday in the first game of its two-game East Coast road trip, fell to 5-5 with the loss.
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Hordy recorded 10 saves for Carolina. UNC's pressure defense forced Stanford to miss eight shots wide of the cage.
"I was pleased with our defense," Levy said. "I thought our defenders played a big role in forcing Stanford to miss so many shots wide. Our midfield also deserves a lot of credit for controlling possession in the first half as we took control of the game."
The Tar Heels will return to action at home versus Vanderbilt on Friday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
