Norfolk, Va. -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got goals from 10 different players and won at Old Dominion, 14-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va. The win improves Carolina to 10-3 this season. ODU falls to 5-7.
Four Tar Heels scored two goals each in the victory, including juniors Christina Juras, Jenn Cook and Melissa McCarthy and sophomore Amber Falcone. Sophomore Lindsay Higgins finished with one goal and an assist.
Chelsea Parks, Julia Ryan, Jess Allen, Meg Freshwater and Jenn Flaherty each scored one goal for UNC. Stephanie Scurachio had one assist and is now tied with McCarthy for the team assist lead with 10 this season.
ODU was led by Caroline Jacobs, who scored four goals.
As a team, the Tar Heels connected on five of seven free position shot attempts, including three of four in the first half and two of three in the second period.
The Lady Monarchs struck first, a mere 3:12 into the game, as Jacobs collected her own rebound off Tar Heel goalkeeper Kristen Hordy. However, Carolina responded by recording four answered goals to take the lead and never looked back. Kimener stopped the scoring barrage at the 14:26 mark to cut the Lady Monarch deficit to two at 4-2. Carolina scored three of the next four goals and entered the half up 7-3.
The Tar Heels opened the second half scoring three straight only to be answered by three consecutive goals by Jacobs. Jacobs' final tally with 9:56 left in the game cut North Carolina's lead to 10-6. In the final minutes of the game however, the Tar Heels reeled off four scores to finish the game.
In goal, Carolina's Hordy made nine saves in playing 54 minutes of action and Amanda Barnes collected two saves in her limited minutes. Old Dominion's Michelle Gannon made four stops playing a majority of the minutes in net.
The Lady Monarch held a slight edge in groundballs, 25-24. Jacobs led the Lady Monarchs in groundballs by tying her career-high for the third time this season with seven. Jamie Hanssen led the Tar Heels in the category by scooping up three.
North Carolina won the battle of the draws, 13-9, with both Jenn Cook and Julia Ryan controlling two. Kristen Truax posted a team-high three for Old Dominion.
Ryan also led the Tar Heels with three caused turnovers, while the Lady Monarchs were led by Jacobs with four.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. with a key home game at Fetzer Field against No. 5 Maryland. The game will mark the final regular-season home contests for UNC seniors Stephanie Scurachio, Lindsey Stover and Kristen Tadlock.
