Tar Heels Down Vanderbilt, 13-9

Chapel Hill - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got four goals from Brooke Dieringer and three goals and an assist from Christina Juras and defeated Vanderbilt, 13-9, on Friday night at Fetzer Field. With the win, Carolina, ranked No. 6 this week in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, improves to 9-3 this season. No. 14 Vanderbilt drops to 4-7 with the loss.
After Vanderbilt had cut the UNC lead to 11-8 midway through the second half, Dieringer scored back-to-back goals in a minute's time to put Carolina back on top by a more comfortable margin. The Commodores would score just one more goal the rest of the way.
Dieringer scored her four goals on just five shots, while Juras' three goals came on four shot attempts. Melissa McCarthy also tallied four points for Carolina, finishing with two goals and two assists. Jess Allen (one goal and one assist) was the only other multi-point scorer for UNC.
Vanderbilt was led by Kate Hickman's three goals and Margie Curran's one goal and three assists on the night. Jennifer Tapscott scored twice for the Commodores.
In the first half, Juras had two goals and an assist to lead Carolina to a 6-4 lead at the break. The Tar Heels out-shot Vanderbilt 18-11 in the opening 30 minutes. After Juras scored off a McCarthy assist less than one minute into the game, Kendall Thrift and Curran scored back-to-back goals for the Commodores to take a 2-1 lead. Dieringer, Meg Freshwater and McCarthy scored three straight goals for UNC, which retook the lead at 4-2. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way until the Tar Heels took a 6-4 lead into the break.
Vanderbilt's Ashley Paschall and Hickman scored two quick goals in the first 1:13 of the second stanza to tie the score at 6-6. Carolina then ripped off five consecutive goals in a 10-minute span to seize control of the action and lead, 11-6, with under 19 minutes to play.
In the first two minutes of the second half, Tapscott and Hickman scored back-to-back goals in the span of 15 seconds to make it 11-8. Dieringer then scored her two straight goals in the span of a minute to give Carolina a 13-8 lead with 11 minutes to play. Hickman scored one more goal for the Commodores down the stretch.
Carolina will return to action on Wednesday with a road game at Old Dominion. UNC's next home game is next Saturday, April 15, against Maryland at 7 p.m.
