NEW LONDON, N.C. -- The North Carolina men's golf team recorded its 11th ACC Championship on Sunday after a playoff against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Carolina, ranked 19th in the nation by Golfweek.com, shares the victory with fourth-ranked Georgia Tech after the teams battled through a two-hole playoff that included all five golfers from each team.
The teams played the par-five 18th hole at the Old North State Club for the first playoff hole. Under the playoff format for the ACC Championship, each team counted four scores toward a total that would then determine a winner. On the first playoff hole, however, the teams tied, each with one birdie, two pars, and a bogey. Next, the Tar Heels and the Yellow Jackets advanced to the 17th hole to continue the playoff. Here, the teams tied again, each recording four pars. As daylight began to fade, the sides agreed to share this year's title.
With this championship, UNC head coach John Inman became the first individual in history to win the ACC Tournament as both a coach and a player. Inman won the 1982 Championship as student at the University of North Carolina.
"It's pretty cool to have achieved a stat like that," said Inman. "I was thinking about it earlier today and was trying to remember all of the details of my individual championship. But, at this point I can't really remember that much of it. This is just a great feeling for this team. These guys were so resilient all weekend and just kept coming back. We're really pleased with the outcome."
The playoff came as a result of some heavy drama toward the end of the final round. Georgia Tech and North Carolina exchanged the lead throughout the day and the need for a playoff did not become apparent until the final hole of the final pairing. Two of the last golfers on the course during regular play, Carolina's Martin Ureta and Georgia Tech's Michael Barbosa, headed to the 18th with Georgia Tech up by one stroke over the Carolina. Ureta shot an even par on the final hole, while Barbosa carded a bogey, sending the tournament to a playoff.
Earlier in the day, the Tar Heels finished up the second round of play due to a weather postponement from Saturday. The team finished round two with a score of 276. When the third round began the Tar Heels came off the first tee with a hot stroke. Four of the five Carolina golfers playing in the tournament carded a birdie or better on the first hole.
Freshman Robert Riesen led the team with a three-round total of 208. In the final round he recorded birdies on holes one and seven, shooting nothing but pars on all the other holes. His eight-under-par performance left him in a tie for third with Clemson's Brian Duncan. Ted Smith also made major contributions for the Tar Heels with a tournament total of 209. Smith, a senior from Westlake, Ohio, fired his lowest round of the tournament in the final round, with a six-under-par 66. He carded an eagle on his final hole of the tournament at the par-five18th. Freshman Chase MacFarland finished one stroke behind Smith with tournament total of 210, which included a second-round score of 66. Martin Ureta and Jonathan Jackson rounded out the team with finishes in 12th and 16th places, respectively.
Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale earned honors as the 2006 ACC individual champion with a tournament total of 10-under-par. Kyle Reifers, of Wake Forest, came in a near second, one stroke behind Tringale, with a three-round total of 207.
With a first place finish in this year's ACC Championship, the Tar Heels earn one point in the Carlyle Cup against Duke. The score is now North Carolina 13, Duke 12.
