Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team tees it up for the first time this fall on October 1st at VCU Shootout. The tournament features a solid field with 11 of the 15 teams having qualified for the 2007 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The field also includes three other ACC teams - Maryland, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
The Tar Heels look forward to starting the season off strong after placing 21st at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship last May; They missed the final round (top 15 teams) by a mere four shots. The Tar Heels lost two golfers to graduation, third team All-American Martin Ureta, who finished 23rd at NCAA's, and Reed Darsie.
The Tar Heels return seniors Barden Berry, Reed Darsie, Josh Moore and Wallace Palmer. Berry and Darsie played in most varsity matches for the Tar Heels last year. Juniors Robert Riesen, Chase MacFarland and Ryan Holler look to make a strong impact on a team. Phillip Chauncey, David Holzworth and Michael Sedacca are the sophomores on the team. The incoming freshman are Kevin O'Connell, Matt Raudenbush, and Henry Zaytoun III. It will be competitive for the top spots on the team.
