Terre Haute, Ind. - Brie Felnagle broke the 20-minute mark on Saturday as she crossed the finish line in 19:57 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. Felnagle led the Tar Heels to a 12th place finish in the white race. The Pre-Nationals were broken down into two separate races.
Felnagle ran her fastest time in the 6K as she ran a 19:57, second-best in the race and third-best in the entire field. The two points accumulated by Felnagle helped give the Tar Heels a great starting point for the rest of the team scoring. The Pre-Nationals event was held in Terre Haute, Ind. at the site of the 2007 Cross Country National Championships.
"Brie had an outstanding race in finishing second and broke the course record only to be outdone by the girl from Colorado," head coach Michael Whittlesey said. Megan Kaltenbach continued her strong season as she finished 22nd overall in a time of 20:51. Addie Bracy took home third place for the Tar Heels as she finished in 90th place with a time of 21:41. The two closest finishers for Carolina were Morgan Stengel and Courtlin LaReau who crossed the line less than seven seconds apart at 21:58 and 22:05. Despite the close finish the two were separated by 15 spots as Stengel finished in 115th, while LaReau took home 130th.
"Megan had a very, very good race and the team as a whole ran strong," Whittlesey added. "I'm really proud of what this team has accomplished today." The Tar Heels will race again in two weeks when they compete in the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, Oct. 28.
