LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Brie Felnagle was the only runner to break the 20-minute mark at the NCAA Regionals in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday as she finished in first place with a time of 19:52 in the 6K event to lead Carolina to a third place finish. Three different Tar Heels earned all-region honors as Megan Kaltenbach finished eighth and Addie Bracy finished 19th to join Felnagle on the all-region team. The men's team finished 14th overall and were led by a trio of runners with Alex Ray taking the top spot on the team with a 52nd place finish. The women's team will learn its fate on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. when the NCAA announces the National Championships field on NCAAsports.com.
The men's 10K race started the day's festivities at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Several Tar Heels were battling illnesses heading into the race, including the top finisher Alex Ray who finished in 52nd place with a time of 31:35.85.
"Alex (Ray) was a little under the weather today but he battled it out and finished first on our team, like he has all year for us," head coach Michael Whittlesey said.
Not far behind Ray was the duo of Tristram Thomas and Ian Bracy who finished 56th and 61st, respectively. Thomas finished the race in 31:41.35 just before Bracy could cross the line less than six seconds later at 31:46.00. Brock Baker took fourth for the Tar Heels as he finished the race in 32:20.25 which was good for 88th place. Closing out the scoring for Whittlesey's crew was Stephen Bloemeke who finished in 125th place with a time of 33:21.15. The women were once again the story of the day as Brie Felnagle claimed the individual regional championship with her second sub-20-minute 6K race of the season. Felnagle's 19:52.25 was more than seven seconds faster than the second place finisher, Emily Harrison of Virginia.
