Little goes all the way to win it
Posted at 6:50 p.m., UNC 20, Duke 14, FINAL
Greg Little's first carry of overtime (and the first Tar Heel offensive play) took him all the way to the end zone. His second career rushing touchdown wins the game for the Tar Heels. Carolina has now won four straight against Duke and 17 of the last 18 meetings. Thanks for reading this season!
Surgan misses left
Posted at 6:48 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; 1st OT
Carolina will operate toward the old fieldhouse and scoreboard, and now needs any score to win.
Heels choose defense first
Posted at 6:46 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; 1st OT
Heels choose defense first. Duke sent three captains, UNC sent Joe Dailey, and Dailey won the toss. Duke will start at the UNC 25, going toward the old fieldhouse and scoreboard.
Wide left!
Posted at 6:41 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; end regulation
The Blue Devils rushed the field, but the kick was wide left, and the Tar Heels go to overtime for the first time since 2005. It's the first overtime in the history of the Carolina-Duke series.
Duke will try a 39 yarder to win
Posted at 6:40 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; :01 4th quarter
Here we go...
Timeout Duke
Posted at 6:38 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; :38 4th quarter
Ted Roof stops the clock with 38 seconds remaining, and Duke has 2nd and 11 at the Carolina 32.
Heels leave it up to the defense
Posted at 6:34 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; 1:25 4th quarter
Carolina looked to keep the ball moving on 3rd and 9, but Zack Pianalto's reception brought him about one yard short, and Terrence Brown's punt was touched back. Duke takes over at their own 20.
Defense gives up on 1st, holds on 3rd and 13
Posted at 6:29 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; 4:37 4th quarter
Kentwan Balmer wrapped up Ronnie Drummer and the Blue Devils are forced to punt.
Little dives for the score
Posted at 6:20 p.m., UNC 14, Duke 14; 7:09 4th quarter
Greg Little went airborne (a la his TD vs. South Carolina) on an end-around to give the Tar Heels six points. Little now has 21 carries for 108 yards, the first Tar Heel back (if it holds) to gain 100 in a game on the season. Connor Barth added the extra point to tie the game.
On that drive, Little would not be denied, carrying 7 times for 41 yards. A Brandon Tate end-around gained 32 yards and cannot be ignored as instrumental to the score.
Deja vu
Posted at 6:09 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 14; 11:15 4th quarter
ack in 2003, during a particularly rough season, we believe it was the game at East Carolina, when both teams were winless, Woody Durham made a comment that the Tar Heels were "shooting themselves in the foot." The astute Mick Mixon, at the time the color man, said something to the effect of, "Woody, I believe they've blown their whole leg off." Well, it looks like deja vu. An Anthony Elzy personal foul on punt coverage gave the Blue Devils the ball at the Carolina 35.
A Duke personal foul backed them up on the ensuing drive, and the Tar Heels take over at their own 28 after a Kevin Jones punt.
Duke goes 15 and 88 in 7:16
Posted at 5:57 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 14; 14:06 4th quarter
Duke takes the lead on a Jamar Wright reception from the UNC 4, and the Heels find themselves down a touchdown. That Duke drive took roughly half of Carolina's total time of possession. Duke has had the ball more than 15 minutes more than the Tar Heels. That's an entire quarter, and it's unacceptable if you want to win football games.
Duke threatening again
Posted at 5:52 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, end third quarter
Duke is now 9 of 14 on third down in this game, for better than 64 percent.. They entered this game 46-160, for about 29 percent. The Tar Heels were giving up 37 percent of third down conversions entering this game. Duke now has 3rd and 1 at the Tar Heel 30.
Heels giving up yards on the ground
Posted at 5:50 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 2:01 third quarter
After a Tar Heel three and out, the Blue Devils have moved the ball very well on the ground and are across the 50 in Tar Heel territory. The Blue Devils have more than 230 yards on the day to UNC's less-than-130.
Heels 1-10 at own 45
Posted at 5:36 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 7:18 third quarter
Thaddeus Lewis hit Jamar Wright for 35 yards, but then fumbled on first down at the UNC 43 (thanks to E.J. Wilson), and Bruce Carter recovered for Carolina.
Bullet, meet foot
Posted at 5:31 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 7:50 third quarter
Greg Little was close to the first down on his 13th carry of the game, when he was called for a taunting penalty. That backed up the Heels 15 yards and an incomplete pass intended for Nicks means Terrence Brown punts again, this time down to the Duke 22.
Heels catch a break
Posted at 5:21 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 10:23 third quarter
Richie Rich's personal foul on the kickoff coverage let the Blue Devils start at their own 46, and they drove to the UNC 20 before Nick Maggio missed the 36-yard FG attempt. The Blue Devils' Justin Boyle carried four times for 15 yards on that drive, but they tried to pass on 3rd and 12. An incompletion set up the ultimately unsuccessful attempt.
Some first half numbers
Posted at 5:08 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 15:00 third quarter
Duke has 7 first downs to UNC's 6
Duke has 63 yards on 24 rushes; UNC, 35 on 11
Duke has 64 yards on 7-9 passing; UNC, 64 on 9-16 and 2 INTs
Duke has 127 total yards to 99 for Carolina
Duke is 5-9 on 3rd down; UNC, 2-6,
Duke has had the ball for 18:49; UNC, 11:11
The Tar Heel seniors have 30 minutes left of their college careers. Here's hoping they go out with a bang.
Heels spinning wheels
Posted at 4:52 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, end first half
Any thoughts Carolina had of putting points on the board late in the first half were fizzled by a Calvin Darity offensive facemask, and the Heels let the clock expire. Duke will receive the kick to start the second half.
Yates misfires again
Posted at 4:46 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 2:09 second quarter
T.J. Yates gives another Blue Devil his first career interception: Catron Gainey, and Duke starts at their own 12.
Timeout, North Carolina
Posted at 4:43 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 3:57 second quarter
Anthony Elzy is unable to convert 3rd and 1 at the Duke 42, and Butch Davis wants to talk things over. Looks like they're going for it. Yates completes it to Hakeem Nicks, who is now the single-season school record holder for receptions in a season, passing Jarwarski Pollock with Nicks' 72nd reception of the season. Heels at the Duke 38.
Tate makes something of nothing
Posted at 4:38 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 5:54 second quarter
Brandon Tate tried to make a play on the punt return at the UNC 40, but got hit as he caught the ball, lost it, recovered, and brought it back to the UNC 49, with help from a Hilee Taylor block. That's where the Tar Heels will take over, trying to get another score before the first half expires.
It must be said the Mark Paschal is making his mark on this game. He already has at least nine tackles, by our unofficial count.
Yates throws his 17th INT
Posted at 4:33 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 7:29 second quarter
T.J. Yates looked for Hakeem Nicks on play action, but a deflection from Chris Davis allowed Jabari Marshall to make his first career interception. That drive looked pretty good, with Greg Little carrying three times for 33 yards. But it was not to be.
Heels take over
Posted at 4:26 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 10:16 second quarter
The tar Heels finally ge33 ta stop on 4th and 7, and Brandon Tate calls for a fair catch at the UNC 19. That's where T.J. Yates will take over. Duke now has had the ball 15 minutes and 31 seconds, to UNC's 4:13.
Today's game is Carolina's last chance to get a 100-yard rusher in a single game, something they haven't failed to do since 1966.
Duke keeps driving
Posted at 4:22 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 12:00 second quarter
Duke has gotten just enough here, just enough there, and they continue to drive and are at their own 48. They are 5 of 6 on third-down conversions and dominating time of possession, at 10:47 to 4:13 in the first.
Mark Paschal has eight tackles already.
A Duke sack takes Heels out of field goal range
Posted at 4:15 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, end first quarter
A one-yard Little run, an incompletion to Bobby Rome and a 13-yard loss on a Patrick Egboh sack set up Terrence Brown to pin the Devils at their own 14. There, the Blue Devils just converted on third and 5 for Duke to keep the drive alive. They'll start at the Duke 25 when play resumes.
Devils don't help themselves
Posted at 4:08 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 3:15 first quarter
Two delay of game penalties backed them up to their own 5 before Kevin Jones got off a punt. Brandon Tate looked like he would let the ball die, but he picked it up off a bounce, and found his way to the Duke 31, where the Heels will start. Duke used Lewis exclusively on that drive, which went three and out before they punted on 4th and 19.
Good field position yields nothing
Posted at 4:02 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 6:03 first quarter
The Tar Heels go three and out despite good field position, and Terrence Brown punts the Devils down to their own 14.
Lewis to Jamar Wright for six
Posted at 3:58 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 7, 6:33 first quarter
It was 1st and goal at the 7 for Duke, but a sack, tackle for loss and delay of game backed them up for 3rd and goal from the 25. No matter. Thaddeus Lewis found Jamar Wright wide open and after the extra point from Maggio, the score is tied.
Duke has used Lewis and Zack Asack nearly evenly at quarterback early in the game.
Devils driving
Posted at 3:52 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 0, 9:33 first quarter
It's a Duke timeout on the field, but the Devils have gone 48 yards in six plays and are threatening from the Tar Heel 19.
Heels score on 6 play, 55 yard drive
Posted at 3:42 p.m., UNC 7, Duke 0, 12:46 first quarter
Brandon Tate caught his fifth touchdown of the season (T.J. Yates' 15th), and the Tar Heels are on the board. Key play - Yates found Hakeem Nicks on 3rd and 7 form the Duke 37, and #88 went 14 yards for the first down. A 15-yard facemask personal foul gave the Heels help on the first play of the game. Carolina has scored on its opening drive for the first time since James Madison on September 1.
Heels take the field
Posted at 3:34 p.m.
Fireworks and flags, and the Tar Heels are on the field, in their home Carolina blue jerseys with white trousers. Duke is in all white, with blue stripes on the sides of their trousers. Carolina will receive the kickoff to start the game. Last chance to win a car!
