Cary, N.C. - The University of North Carolina cross country teams sent several runners to Cary, N.C. Saturday for the Wolfpack Invite. The men's side finished second as head coach Michael Whittlesey sent some of the Tar Heels' middle distance runners to compete at the event. Carolina will look to advance to the NCAA Championships next Saturday when they participate in the Southeast Regionals in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Head coach Michael Whittlesey sent 12 runners to Cary for the Wolfpack Invite with nine men competing and three women. The men were joined by Duke to field teams in the men's 5K race but came up short of the Blue Devils as Duke tallied 22 points and the Tar Heels finished the day with 33 points.
Carolina could have used the three points from John Curtiss and the seven points from Matt Hamrick who both competed in the race unattached. Finishing first on the day for the Tar Heels was Nick Krouse who finished eighth overall in a time of 15:55.53. Following Krouse was Sam Pompei who took home 12th place just ahead of Adam Smith who finished in 15th. Cody Harper (17th/16:57.54) and Michael Rollins (20th/17:33.56) closed out the scoring for the Tar Heels. Other Carolina runners who were running unattached were Andrew Rotz (11th/16:12.67) and Jamie Reichlin (18th/17:19.87).
On the women's side just three runners ran for the Heels. Callan Fike and Dominique Jackson ran unattached and finished in fourth and eighth, respectively. Alexis Deegan was the lone attached runner for Carolina as she crossed the line in 19:19.84 for ninth.
Carolina will travel to Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 10 for the southeast regionals and the chance to advance to the NCAA Championships. The Tar Heel women are ranked No. 2 in the region after their fourth place finish at the ACC Championships.
