Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is ranked 12th in the first Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll of the spring season. The Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The poll is based on the selections of twenty men's coaches from across the country. The complete results, including results from Divisions II, III and the NAIA, will appear in the February 23rd issue of Golf World and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com/menspoll.
Florida, previously number two in Golf World's last College Coaches' Poll of 2006, has claimed the top spot from Alabama after winning its opening tournament of the spring, the Gator Invitational. Rounding out the top five are: Stanford (No. 2), Oklahoma State (No. 3), Alabama (No. 4) and Georgia (No. 5).
Other Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll are: Clemson (No. 10), Georgia Tech (No. 16), Wake Forest (Tied No. 17), Duke (No. 20) and Florida State (No. 24).
The Tar Heels begin their spring campaign March 4-6 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. Carolina is also ranked 13th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
