No. 1 Carolina Completes Sweep Of Seawolves

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshmen outfielders Tim Fedroff and Drew Poulk each homered and combined for seven hits on the day, and starting pitchers Alex White and Luke Putkonen allowed just three runs over 12 2/3 innings to lead No. 1 North Carolina (7-0) to a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook (0-3) Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels posted an 8-2 win in game one and followed with a 9-2 victory in the second contest.
Fedroff went 4-for-6 with a solo home run, a triple and two RBI in his first two career starts, while Poulk was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a two-run home run all in game two. Sophomore Tim Federowicz also had four hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 effort with three RBI in the first game. Juniors Reid Fronk and Josh Horton each added two RBI in the series finale.
White (2-0) allowed just one run on two hits 6 2/3 strong innings in game one. The Greenville native struck out one, walked two and has allowed just one run in 12 2/3 innings over his first two career starts. One of four relievers used in the opener, freshman right-hander B.J. Dail closed with a scoreless ninth in his first career appearance.
In the final game of the series, Putkonen (2-0) struck out a season-best six batters over six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits and two walks. The Marrietta, Ga., product is now a perfect 8-0 in his two seasons in Chapel Hill. Five relievers combined for three shutout innings to close out game two, including junior Andrew Carignan, who came on to strike out two batters with the bases loaded in the eighth.
In game one, the Tar Heels scored a single run in four of the first five frames before breaking open a tight contest with four runs in the seventh. Dustin Ackley plated the first run with his eighth double of the season in the first, before Fedroff drove in an unearned run in the second with his first career hit. The Flagtown, N.J., native followed with a solo home run to right two innings later.
Federowicz took over from there with an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run base hit in the seventh. Second baseman Kyle Seager followed with a run-scoring single for the Tar Heels' eighth and final run of game one. Federowicz, Fedroff and Ackley each had at least two hits in the first game of the day for the Tar Heels.
Stony Brook's Mike Errigo (0-1) worked 6 1/3 innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Chris Sipp had two of the Seawolves' four hits in game one and was a combined 5-for-8 on the day.
Carolina trailed for the first time this season in the second game, as Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Sipp in the first. The Tar Heels tied the game in the third, as Poulk reached on a bad-hop single to second and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Ackley.
UNC went in front with three runs in the fifth on Poulk's team-best third home run of the season and an RBI groundout by Horton, and it pulled away with five more over the seventh and eighth innings. Fronk opened the seventh with an RBI double, Horton followed two batters later with a run-scoring triple to right center and Flack then added a sacrifice fly to center to score Horton.
Fronk added a sac fly in the eighth, and back-up shortstop Ryan Graepel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to close out the scoring for the Tar Heels. Fronk, Fedroff and Poulk each had multi-hit games in the nightcap.
SBU's Kurt Jung (0-1) took the game two loss after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.
The Tar Heels are back in action midweek against Gardner-Webb Tuesday and Coastal Carolina Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
