CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore right-hander Adam Warren struck out a career-best seven batters over six innings, and designated hitter Tim Federowicz went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace No. 1 North Carolina in a 4-2 win over Gardner-Webb Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (8-0) scored four runs over the first two innings and held off a late rally for their fourth straight win over the Bulldogs (5-6).
Warren, who went six innings for the first time in his career, also matched a career high with five hits allowed but surrendered only one run. He worked out of jams in the first and fourth innings and was aided by catcher Benji Johnson, who threw out two base runners and made a key tag on an attempted squeeze play in the fourth. Warren (1-0) earned his second career win in just his fourth career midweek start.
Johnson also provided some offense for the Tar Heels with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fourth for the final run of the day for UNC, which is now 8-0 for the third straight season.
Left fielder Reid Fronk, who was 2-for-4 with his team-best 14th run scored on the season, tripled to right center on the first pitch of the game from Gardner-Webb's Ben Campbell and scored on a Dustin Ackley sacrifice fly to put Carolina on the board in the first.
First baseman Chad Flack followed with a double to left center to put runners at second and third for Federowicz, who singled through left side for a 3-0 UNC lead. He added a single in the eighth and now shares the team RBI lead with Ackley at nine.
The Tar Heels did not score after Johnson's home run, while the Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth on a Jeremiah Lokken RBI single. Warren and relievers Rob Catapano and Rob Wooten held Gardner-Webb quiet until the ninth when an unearned run off closer Andrew Carignan trimmed the lead to 4-2. Carignan escaped the threat with just the one run allowed and picked up his first save of the season and the 16th of his career.
Campbell (1-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs after allowing four runs on four this over two innings. Lokken and Jay McConnell each had two hits on the day for GWU.
Carolina is back in action Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium against No. 22 Coastal Carolina (9-1) at 3 p.m. A webcast of the game will be available on ACC Select.
