
No. 1 Tar Heels Overpower Brown, 17-5

CHAPEL HILL- Five different players scored two goals each as the University of North Carolina easily moved past Brown, 17-5, on Sunday at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Ranked No. 1 in the country by this week's Inside Lacrosse media poll, Carolina jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back as they moved to 3-0 on the young season and handed Brown (0-1) a loss in their first game.
North Carolina got on the board less than a minute into the game with a goal by Chrissy Rude off an assist from Christina Juras. Rude then connected on Carolina's second goal three minutes later off an assist from Jess Allen, while Kelly Taylor found the net soon after to put the Tar Heels up three goals. Joining Rude with two goals on the day were Juras, Erica LaGrow, Meg Freshwater, and Melissa McCarthy.
Down 3-0, Brown closed the gap in the 14th minute with a goal from junior Mimi DeTolla. Carolina quickly answered as freshman attacker Megan Bosica found the net on another Juras assist. Bosica's goal marked the first of nine straight goals the Tar Heels scored to finish the first period. Senior Melissa McCarthy had two goals in the final eight minutes, while Juras, Freshwater, Chelsea Parks, Amber Falcone, and Julia Ryan all scored as well to put Carolina up 11-1 at the half.
In the second half, Jess Allen, Erica LaGrow, and Kristen Taylor all notched goals to up Carolina's goal total to 17 on the afternoon at a rainy Henry Stadium. Brown managed four goals in the final half on four shots with goals from DeTolla, Lauren Vitkus, and Bethany Buzzell.
Throughout the game, Carolina's continuous possession limited Brown to only seven total shots as compared to UNC's 32. Brown committed 23 fouls that contributed to 12 free-position shots for the Tar Heels, of which five were converted.
The No.1 ranked Tar Heels will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday and Sunday with match-ups against Loyola (Md.) and Temple.
