COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland goalkeeper Allie Buote recorded 13 saves and six different Terrapin players scored goals as the Terps handed No. 1-ranked North Carolina its first loss of the season, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.
With the win, No. 4 Maryland improves to 8-1 this season, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina falls to 8-1, 1-1 and sees its eight-game winning streak come to an end.
The Tar Heels were led in scoring by freshman Kristen Taylor, who tallied two goals and an assist. Senior Christina Juras scored twice and fellow senior Chrissy Rude had a goal and an assist. Jenn Russell also scored a goal for UNC, while Erica LaGrow and Megan Bosica each tallied an assist.
Two of Buote's saves came on good scoring opportunities in the game's final minutes to preserve the win. Dana Dobbie tallied two goals and one assist for Maryland while Caitlyn McFadden also had a pair of goals. Kelly Kasper had a goal and an assist.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes on a free position goal from Rude and a Juras goal off a Taylor assist. The Terps came right back with three straight goals of their won, including back-to-back scores in a span of 41 seconds, to take a 3-2 lead with 14:31 left in the opening period.
Juras scored off a Rude assist at the 10:32 mark of the first half to break the Maryland run and tie the score at 3-3. The Terrapins then out-scored Carolina 5-1 to take a 8-4 lead during a key stretch that began late in the first half and continued until the midway point of the second.
Taylor scored two goals in less than a minute for the Tar Heels to cut the lead to 8-6 with 11:10 left to play, but neither team scored the rest of the way.
The Tar Heels will return to action with a pair of home games next weekend. Carolina will host Georgetown on Friday March 30 at 7 p.m. and will host Boston College on Sunday April 1 at noon.
