CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team spotted Georgetown a 5-1 first-half lead before storming back to defeat the Hoyas, 8-6, on Friday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels ended the game on a 7-1 run. Kristen Taylor scored three times for Carolina in the win, while Megan Bosica scored twice.
With the victory, No. 2-ranked Carolina improved to 9-1 this season and bounced back from last Saturday's loss at Maryland. No. 7 Georgetown fell to 6-3 with the loss.
In the first half, Georgetown jumped out to an early 5-1 lead behind goals from five different players. Georgetown held an early 12-1 advantage in shot attempts, but by the end of the half UNC had cut the shot tally to 20-12. The Tar Heels battled back late in the half to make it 5-4 Hoyas at the break. Bosica and Taylor both scored twice for Carolina before halftime.
In the second half, Taylor scored on a free position shot at the 23:25 mark to tie the score at 5-5. After Zan Morley scored for the Hoyas to make it 6-5 Georgetown, Carolina scored the last three goals of the game.
Veteran Lindsay Higgins scored an unassisted goal on a spin move in front of the net to tie it at 6-6, then Erica LaGrow scored what would prove to be the game-winner off a pretty pass from Melissa McCarthy with 5:41 left to play in the game. Kelly Taylor added an insurance goal in the final two minutes.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday afternoon with an Atlantic Coast Conference contest against Boston College at noon at Fetzer Field.
