
Tar Heels Dominate Hokies, 15-5

BLACKSBURG, VA. -- Eleven different North Carolina players scored as the Tar Heels defeated Virginia Tech, 15-5, on Friday afternoon in collegiate women's lacrosse action at the Tech Lacrosse Stadium. After the score was tied 1-1 in the opening minutes, Carolina went on a 10-0 run and held the Hokies scoreless for a span of 34:08 to cruise to the victory.
With the win, No. 3-ranked UNC improves to 12-2 overall this season, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. With the defeat, unranked Virginia Tech falls to 5-10, 0-4 in the ACC.
Eleven different Tar Heels scored goals in the game, including Chelsea Parks with three, Chrissy Rude with two goals and an assist and Kristen Taylor with two goals. Melissa McCarthy and Christina Juras both had a goal and an assist, while Carolina got single goals from Erica LaGrow, Jenn Cook, Kelly Taylor, Meg Freshwater, Jess Allen and Megan Bosica. Amber Falcone tallied an assist for Carolina.
Britt Faulkner scored twice for the Hokies.
In the first half, Bosica scored at the 26:56 mark to give the Tar Heels an early 1-0 lead. The Hokies responded less than two minutes later as Faulkner scored to make the score 1-1. From that point forward, the Tar Heels went on their 10-0 run.
Carolina out-scored Virginia Tech 6-0 the rest of the way in the opening half. Five different UNC players scored during the 6-0 run and Parks scored twice during the span.
After leading 7-1 at halftime, Carolina exploded for four goals in the first 3:18 of the second period to break open the game and take an 11-1 lead. The Hokies finally scored their second goal of the contest at the 20:27 mark when Kady McBrearty scored to make it 11-2 Carolina.
Cook responded with her first goal of the season just 30 seconds later, and Kelly Taylor made it 13-2 with 18:20 left to play. The teams traded goals down the stretch but the Hokies could never cut the Tar Heel lead to less than nine goals.
Kristen Hordy started in goal for the Tar Heels and recorded six saves, allowing three goals in 47:28 of action. Freshman Logan Ripley came in to replace Hordy and tallied one save and one goal allowed in 8:50 of play. Amanda Barnes finished things up in the cage, allowing a goal in 3:42 of action.
UNC took 28 shots compared to Tech's 15. Carolina also held the advantage in ground balls (28-15) and draw controls (13-9).
The Tar Heels will return to action at home on Sunday, when they host Longwood at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
