Carolina Golfer Martin Ureta Qualifies For U.S. Open

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Martin Ureta, who just concluded his collegiate career as a Tar Heel, qualified for the 2007 U.S. Open Championship to be played June 14-17 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. Former Tar Heel All-America Davis Love, III, will also be among the U.S. Open participants. Ureta, who tied for 22nd at last week's NCAA Championship, played in a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., on Monday. Sixty-five players participated with just five spots available.
Rhys Davis, from East Tennessee State, topped the field with a 137 total after firing rounds of 72-65. Joey Sindelar, who carded a pair of 69s for a 138 total, and Fred Funk, who posted a 139 with rounds of 68-71, grabbed three of the spots. Ureta (72-68), Luke List (72-68) and Philip Pettitt, Jr. (68-72) all carded 140 totals and were in a playoff at 8:30 Tuesday morning. Ureta and Pettitt captured the two spots. All three players birdied the first playoff hole, Ureta carded a par on the second hole while the other two bogied to grab the first spot. On the third playoff hole, Pettitt won the last spot by posting a par while List, whose parents were both All-America swimmers at Carolina, carded a bogey.
Also on Monday, Henry Zaytoun, III, who will join the Tar Heel golf team this fall, qualified for the Nationwide Tour's Rex Hospital Open to be played June 7-10 at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C. Zaytoun, who is from Raleigh, played high school golf at Ravenscroft. Three former Tar Heels will also be playing in the Rex Hospital Open this week - Tar Heel All-Americas Tom Scherrer and Dustin Bray and Ramon Bescansa.
