Tar Heels Take Two From Big Ten

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - North Carolina took the lead for good just over two minutes into Sunday's field hockey game and rolled on to a 5-2 win over 10th-ranked Iowa on the final day of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Phyllis Ocker Field. The third-ranked Tar Heels (2-0) scored all five of their goals in the first half.
For the second game in a row, senior Jesse Gey opened the scoring. But while UNC's first goal didn't come until after halftime in Saturday's game, Sunday the teams barely had time to break a sweat before the Tar Heels were on the board. The game wasn't yet three minutes old when Gey took a pass from senior Alli Tanner on a give-and-go in front of the goal and put it past Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley. Just over seven minutes later, senior Heather Kendell made it 2-0 when she put in a pass from junior Britt van Beek on the right side of the goal.
Senior Rachel Dawson had a pair of goals on Saturday, and she would equal that on Sunday. Her first came 21:03 into the game on a direct penalty corner shot, assisted by Gey and freshman Katelyn Falgowski.
Sophomore Melanie Brill then boosted the score to 4-0 with the first goal of her career, assisted by Falgowski on a penalty corner. Dawson added her second goal 17 seconds before halftime with a diving shot in front of the goal, assisted by senior Laree Beans.
After trailing 5-0 at halftime, the Hawkeyes got on the board quickly in the second half. Just over two minutes into the period, Tricia Dean grabbed the ball in front of the net and sent it past UNC goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer, who replaced starter Brianna O'Donnell at halftime. Katie Naughton gave Iowa its second goal when she put back a rebound after a UNC save in the 51st minute of play.
"It was a tale of two halves," North Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "We came out very strong and really played well for about 35 minutes. Iowa made some adjustments in the second half and did a much better job on us. I congratulate them for winning the second half - I don't feel great about that. But I'm excited for our team and the progress we're making. It's a good start for us to play two great Big Ten teams and come away with wins."
For the game, UNC had 16 shots to eight by Iowa and drew nine penalty corners after managing just four on Saturday.
Carolina came away from the event 2-0 for the fifth year in a row. In the six years of the current format (UNC and Wake Forest from the ACC meet Michigan and Iowa from the Big Ten), UNC is 11-1.
The Tar Heels play their first home game of the season on Friday, hosting second-ranked Wake Forest. Game time at Henry Stadium is 7 p.m.
