South Bend, Ind. - The North Carolina men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Notre Dame Invite on Friday afternoon as the women took home 10th place and the men finished 19th. Brie Felnagle led the women as she crossed the line in a time of 16:48, good for fourth overall. Both teams will have a week off before sending teams to the NCAA Preview at Terra Haute, Ind., the Penn State Invite and the Furman Invite.
The women accumulated 272 points in the race as they were led by Felnagle who finished fourth overall with a time of 16:48 in her first race of the 2007 season. Taking home second place for the Tar Heels on the afternoon was senior Megan Kaltenbach who finished in 32nd with a time of 17:38. Not far behind Kaltenbach was Addie Bracy who crossed the finish line 18 seconds later for 57th overall. Finishing out the scoring for Carolina on the day was Morgan Stengel and Lauren Holesh who finished in 91st and 92nd place as Stengel edged out Holesh by a second.
"Brie executed the race plan quite well and helped out the team," head coach Michael Whittlesey said. "The women ran a solid race but we need to tighten up a few time gaps in the future."
The men finished 19th overall as they were led by Alex Ray who finished 51st individually with a time of 24:52 in the five mile race. Ray was the only Tar Heel runner to finish under the 25-minute mark. Tristram Thomas and Nick Hutchins finished back-to-back as Thomas took 113th just ahead of Hutchins as the pair finished with an identical time of 25:50. Zach Dawson was the fourth runner for Carolina as he crossed the line at 26:07 for 130th. Stephen Bloemke closed out the scoring for UNC in 138th with a time of 26:14.
"On the men's side we struggled in the middle part of the race and were never able to overcome it," Whittlesey added.
The Tar Heels will have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 as the women will head to the NCAA Preview in Terra Haute, Ind. and the men will be at both the Furman Invite and the Penn State National Invite.
