UNC Women Downed By Virginia In Swimming & Diving

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite a strong showing in both diving events, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team fell to Virginia 191-109 Sunday afternoon in Koury Natatorium. This is the team's first Atlantic Coast Conference loss and third loss overall this season.
The Tar Heels finished first in four events, including both one and three meter diving, the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. North Carolina took the top four spots in three meter diving and the four of the top five spots in one meter diving. The Tar Heel divers were led by seniors Lauren Filip and Erika Matheis, juniors Erica Schiffler and Katy Pritchett and sophomore Mandi Arak
Virginia took first place in the women's 200-yard medley relay with a "B" qualifying time of 1:42.11. The Tar Heels finished second with a time of 1:43.19. Swimming for North Carolina was sophomore Megan Steeves, sophomore Alison Clemens, senior Lindsey Marck and senior Kelsey Morrisy. The Cavaliers took third posting a time of 1:43.63. North Carolina placed fourth with a time of 1:44.22.
The Tar Heels took first in the women's 1000-yard freestyle behind senior Whitney Sprague's time of 9:47.81. Virginia's Jennifer Narum and Claire Galdun took second and third, with times of 9:48.78 and 9:55.81, respectively. With her finish, Narum became the seventh fastest performer in Atlantic Coast Conference history. North Carolina freshman Katura Harvey finished fourth with a time of 9:55.95.
The Cavaliers took the top four spots in the women's 200-yard freestyle. Stephanie Glover finished first with a "B" qualifying time of 1:49.85. Jenna Harris took second posting a "B" qualifying time of 1:49.95. Megan Evo finished third with a "B" qualifying time of 1:49.98. In fourth place was Kristen Moores with a time of 1:50.84. Sophomore Ashley Howard took fifth for the Tar Heels with a time of 1:50.86.
Virginia won its second-straight event in the women's 100-yard backstroke with Mei Christensen's "B" qualifying time of 54.76. With that time, Christensen moves from ninth to eighth place in ACC history. Megan Steeves took second for North Carolina with a "B" qualifying time of 55.92. The Cavaliers' Amanda Faulkner finished third with a time of 56.30. Tar Heel junior Kimmy Davis took fourth with a time of 57.28.
The Cavaliers took their streak to three with the top two finishes in the women's 100-yard breaststroke. Katherine McDonnell posted a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.61. Fellow Cavalier had a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.63. North Carolina took third, fourth and fifth with a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.67 from Alison Clemens, a time of 1:04.80 from freshman Katie Marsh and a time of 1:06.50 from junior Jen Frazier.
Virginia took another victory in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, claiming the top two spots. Katherine McDonnell had a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.61, followed by fellow Cavalier Ellie Freeman with a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.63. Alison Clemens took third for the Tar Heels with a "B" qualifying time of 1:03.67 followed by fellow Tar Heels Katie Marsh and Jen Frazier with times of 1:04.80 and 1:06.50, respectively.
In the women's 200-yard butterfly, Virginia's Elizabeth Shaw set a new ACC record with an "A" qualifying time of 1:57.04. The record was previously held by North Carolina's Kelly Weeks who posted a time of 1:57.66 in 2003. The Cavaliers' Claire Crippen took second with a "B" qualifying time of 1:59.53, followed by her teammate Katya Bachrouche who posted a "B" qualifying time of 2:01.78. Lindsey Marck took fourth for North Carolina with a time of 2:04.39.
The Cavaliers took first in the women's 50-yard freestyle behind Jessica Lewis's "B" qualifying time of 23.24. North Carolina freshman Rebecca Kane finished second with a time of 23.54. Virginia's Amber Bialas took third with a time of 23.72 followed by teammate Hannah Davis who posted a time of 23.78.
North Carolina took the top four spots in women's three meter diving. Laura Filip led the Tar Heels with 279 points. Finishing second for the Tar Heels was Mandi Arak with 274.72 points followed by Erika Matheis with a score of 270.30. Erica Schiffler took fourth with a score of 263.10.
Virginia's Jessica Lewis took first in the women's 100-yard freestyle with a "B" qualifying time of 50.34. North Carolina's Kelsey Morrissy finished second with a "B" qualifying time of 50.58. Fellow Tar Heel Rebecca Kane took third with a time of 51.36. Kristen Moores finished fourth for Virginia, posting a time of 51.76.
The Cavaliers' claimed victory in their eighth event with the top two finishes in women's 200-yard backstroke. Mei Christensen posted a "B" qualifying time of 1:58.25 followed by teammate Amanda Faulkner who posted a "B" qualifying time of 1:59.64. North Carolina's Ashley Howard took third with a "B" qualifying time of 2:00.69, followed by sophomore teammate Barbara Thomas with a time of 2:04.18.
The Tar Heels took first in the women's 200-yard breaststroke behind Alison Clemens's "B" qualifying time of 2:17.00. Virginia's Katherine McDonnell finished second with a "B" qualifying time of 2:17.26 followed by fellow Cavalier Ellie Freeman with a "B" qualifying time of 2:17.60 and Claire Crippen with a time of 2:20.39.
In the women's 500-yard freestyle the Cavaliers' Jennifer Narum took first with a "B" qualifying time of 4:49.21. North Carolina's Whitney Sprague finished second with a "B" qualifying time of 4:50.39. Virginia took third and fourth with a "B" qualifying time of 4:51.38 by Katya Bachrouche and a "B" qualifying time of 4:53.15 from Jenna Harris.
Virginia took the top two spots in the women's 100-yard butterfly. Elizabeth Shaw posted a "B" qualifying time of 54.74 followed by her teammate Megan Evo with a time of 56.17. North Carolina's Lindsey Marck finished third with a time of 56.20. The Cavaliers' Stephanie Glover took fourth with a time of 56.25.
In women's three meter diving North Carolina took three of the top four spots. Erica Schiffler took first with a score of 314.93. Fellow Tar Heel Laura Filip finished second with 296.63 points. Virginia's Jackie Apple took third with a score of 286.50. North Carolina's Erika Matheis and Katy Pritchett took third and fourth with 282.75 and 250.50 points, respectively.
Elizabeth Shaw of Virginia won her third event of the meet in the women's 200-yard individual medley with a "B" qualifying time of 2:02.38. The next three spots were claimed by Cavaliers. Mei Christensen finished second with a "B" qualifying time of 2:03.08 followed by Claire Crippen with a "B" qualifying time of 2:03.53. Amanda Faulkner took fourth with a time of 2:04.82. North Carolina's Barbara Thomas finished fifth with a time of 2:05.96.
In the final event of the meet, the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, the Cavaliers took first with a "B" qualifying time of 3:23.28. The Tar Heels took second with a "B" qualifying time of 3:24.26. Swimming for North Carolina was Megan Steeves, Rebecca Kane, sophomore Eliza Butts and Kelsey Morrissy. Virginia took third with a time of 3:27.08, followed by North Carolina with a time of 3:32.74.
Virginia is now 7-2 overall and 4-0 in ACC competition. North Carolina is 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels return to action February 1 when they take on North Carolina State at Koury Natatorium.
