Tar Heels Trail After Day One Action Versus Minnesota

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams trail after the first day of competition Friday at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heels were led by wins from freshman David MacDonald, senior Erica Schiffler, junior Megan Steeves and sophomore Tyler Harris.
The Carolina divers swept both boards on the evening. David MacDonald took first place on the one-meter board and set a career high score of 336.68. Senior Erica Schiffler won the three-meter with 255.30 points. MacDonald was followed on the one-meter board by teammates David Solarz and Austin Bradyhouse, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Freshman Jenna Moore and Kristin Arnold placed third and fourth on the three-meter board.
In the men's 1000-yard freestyle the Tar Heels had a strong showing, placing 2-3-4 in the event. Sophomore Joe Kinderwater finished second, senior Yi-Khy Saw took third and sophomore Chip Peterson touched fourth.
Evan Reed swam to a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a blistering time of 1:38.36, missing his career best by two-hundredths of a second.
Megan Steeves won the second individual event of the night for Carolina in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.32.
The Tar Heel men placed 2-3-4 in the 100-yard backstroke, led by sophomore Tommy Wyher's second place time of 49.74. Junior tri-captain Jeff James finished third and sophomore Josh Hafkin took fourth.
Sophomore Flynn Jones eclipsed his month old career best in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.30.
Freshman Layne Brodie and junior Alison Clemens led the Tar Heel women in the 200-yard individual medley with second and third place finishes, respectively.
In the final individual event of the evening, sophomore Tyler Harris swam to a win in the men's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:50.40.
Day two action versus Minnesota will begin Saturday Nov. 1 at 12 noon.
